Today’s Focus Is On Many Small But Important Laundry Loads.

Now that I am back from my travels to New Orleans and back I find that I had so much laundry that it has taken awhile to sort through it all which includes a picture of the Cardinal Faithful at the top of the column. LIC4!

                                                         BASKETBALL

Formula for a Louisville Win at Providence  

On a night when Sara Hammond was not having her best game others stepped up to create such a balanced attack that Providence could not shut Louisville down by focusing on only one.  Note: Shoni Schimmel with 17 Bria Smith scored 17 Nita Slaughter 12 and Monique Reid 11.

Be sure to check the site tomorrow for Quentin and Paul’s planned in depth pre-game report regarding Tuesday’s away game at Hartford against UConn.   It is reported to be available on the CBS Sports Network at 9 PM.

                                               Bearcats to visit the KFC YUM! Center

We have to wait until this Friday to again see the basketball women in person.  They will be playing Cincinnati at the home beginning at 7:00.   The fans have been great with almost 10,000 at last mid-week week’s game against Rutgers but it is time for us to step it up.  This week the holidays are behind us and the game is not on a weekday night so this is the time for Louisville to challenge Tennessee for the #1 school for fan attendance.

GOLF

UCF CHALLENGE

Women’s Golf is gearing up for a February 10-12 winter challenge located in Sorrento, FL. while later  in the month they will strain themselves to spent time in Miami Lakes, FL so they can participate in the Sir Pizza Challenge.  A trip to Hawaii follows in March.   Congratulations to the team’s scheduler!  I am sure their future recruits are taking note and just in case they are I found a woman’s golf recruiting form at http://www.gocards.com/sports/w-golf/spec-rel/lou-w-golf-recruit-form.html.

LACROSSE

The Lacrosse team’s scheduler should confer with the golf team’s person  for instead of suffering through Florida and Hawaii  like their fellow Louisville athletes, instead, in less than a month, they begin their schedule here at the U of L LaCrosse Stadium on Feb. 10^th, 16^th and 23 against Canisius, Ohio State then Old Dominion.  Coach Kellie Young enters her 6^th season as head coach.

Lacrosse is a sport that several of us here at CARDINAL COUPLE haved vowed to learn more about this season. Our current plans are to send Sandy to a lacrosse boot camp and have her go through the day-to-day practices and activities that the players in training participate in. We'll probably have Timmy the Intern and a EMS staffer or two accompany her. In our never-ending quest to provide you the best in Louisville womens' athletics, we feel this is a novel idea and ground breaking.

TRACK

Fortunately for the track team, indoor arenas not only exist but are scheduled for their January 25-26 participation in the IU Relays being held at Bloomington, Indiana and in the Rod McCravy Memorial being held at Lexington, KY.  Without the indoor arenas, imagine the hurdlers in full snow bunny outfits where all of the hurdles are knocked over by their bunny feet shoes.  Instead, they have posted three wins and hit 18 Big East qualifying marks on the final day of the Kentucky Invitational, which was last Saturday.   Details of the meet are available at http://www.gocards.com/sports/w-track/recaps/011213aaa.html.

TENNIS

Xavier and Morehead State arrive in Louisville for a match at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center this Sunday, January 20 with Southern Illinois and Miami of Ohio following on Saturday the 26^th.  They keep a pretty busy schedule through February with the Big East Championships set for Mid-April.   You can check out their complete schedule at http://www.gocards.com/sports/w-tennis/sched/lou-w-tennis-sched.html.  They go into this season for “the first time in program history”, with two players ranked in the top 100 going into the dual match season.   Those players are Junior Rebecca Shine and junior teammate Julia Fellerhoff ranked No. 84 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Our swim and diving team has only 4 events left before the Feb 27 Big East Championships at Indianapolis.  They swept visiting BIG EAST rival Cincinnati Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The Cardinal men won 184-100 and the Cardinal women won 188-104.  All but 1 of the upcoming matches are away starting in Dallas but on the January 26^th they will be in Lexington Kentucky before a final match against Indiana is held at the Ralph Wright Natatorium on February 1.

SOFTBALL

The softball team scheduler seems to have split allegiances with that of the golf and Lacrosse teams folks.   They open the season Feb 8th. in Las Vegas and will then spend time in Jacksonville, Florida for games on the 15^th, 16 and 17^th.   The women will play Stony Brook, Bethune Cookman, Ohio State, Jacksonville, and again against Stony Brook.  They next show a split decision of scheduling with games at Ulmer Stadium on February 22, 23 and 24 in the Cardinal Classic.

Feburary in Las Vegas, Jacksonville or Louisville can be hit or miss on the weather. Here's hoping for blue skies and sunny days for Sandy Pearsall's squad.

No time in Sandy’s house this weekend for laundry

Paul and Sonja have been fortunate enough to play the role of football team groupie but in the meantime the remaining contributors struggle to keep up with their high quality of reporting.  With no time available this wekend I brought in a couple of sub-contributors for assistance.

Central Cardinal Club 2012 Holiday Boutique and Style Show

We are proud to announce that the Central Cardinal Club is organizing a Holiday Boutique and Style Show all for the purpose of your being able to meet The Cardinal Couple and many of those contributing articles to the site.  Paul will be at the October 16 show from its 11 am beginning and others will join him during the day until the program ends at 9 pm.  Timmy is still undecided if he will be available for autographs.

Red White Scrimmage

I understand last night’s men’s basketball Red White Scrimmage went well and was successful.  As a note of interest:  Many teams across the country are combining such new season events for their men’s and women’s basketball teams.    In recent years, U of L has normally been ahead of the curve when it comes to promotion of their women’s teams but not this time.               

       

                                         

I am sure that there are many good reasons for the UL women’s basketball team to not have either a combined or sole pre-season event but other schools across the nation have begun thinking differently.  I don’t really believe that # 20 ranked and UL highly recruited guard Saniya Chong signed with Connecticut on Saturday only because of their Friday night combined men’s and women’s basketball team kick off (“First Night”) but her official visit and signing did conveniently occur during the weekend of the event.  It couldn’t have hurt for recruits to see such pre-season excitement and attention being given to both of the teams.

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball played St. John’s Friday at St. Johns and came away with a  3-2 win over St. in BIG EAST volleyball action. Scoring was 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 19-25 and 15-9.  The women are now 17-3 and 6-1 in the Big East and play again today at 2:00  at UConn.

Today the Golf team continues play at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational. The team finished play in yesterday Second round in 12^th place with Tar Lyons leading for the Cardinals.  All day play continues today at Chapel Hill, NC.

CROSS COUNTRY

Yesterday the cross country team participated in the NCAA Division I Pre-National Meet at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park which is the site for this year’s 2012 NCAA Championships.  The U of L women were lead by sophomore Michelle Molodynia who completed a career best 6K time o f22:16.10.

It is a messy, messy time of year with multiple weather temperature changes and periodic rain that keeps the dirty clothes piling up.   In addition, add all of the extra clothing needs due to all of the recruiting traveling going on from in house visits and official visits

BASKETBALL

We are at the crossroads where basketball activity is busy. For the fan, though, there are no games to attend.  There are only lots of internet rumblings and gossip about recruits visits and reactions to them -- both their official visit to the schools and at their homes.  Those of us who are eagerly awaiting the season’s first game find ourselves, while trying to fill in the building excitement, seeking out any piece of information to be found.  I hear that Jenny is
even bribing Coco to hide out in the stalls of various women’s restrooms and listen for new pieces of recruiting information.   

The recent and upcoming visitors, as well as other young ladies that Jeff is seeking can in the future become known as Louisville’s trail blazers

 and a member of a historical break out recruiting class or they can choose to individually be known as just another of the followers of early greats from other schools.   To all of those who sign on, welcome aboard and hang on as it is going to be a great ride as you make your own history!

Sunday was the home visit of Emmonnie Henderson, where it was reported as a great visit, while Mercedes home visit was reported to have been on Tuesday as she was definitely saving the best visit for last.  Her expected official Louisville trip set for October 26.  One of our weekend visitors, Alex Harris – another post player -  committed to Penn State over Louisville & Michigan so my dual post game plan seems to be in tatters.   Included in the report is that Duke was also visiting Kentucky’s Becca Greenwell last night. Wonder what Jo Ann is telling recruits these days. Anyone with updates to these or other recruits information,   please feel free to send in comments.

Reminder of the Tip off Luncheon:

The annual Tip Off Luncheon is set for Tuesday October 23 with doors opening at 11:15 am.  The event will be held at the YUM! Center and was a sold out event last year so get your ticket reservations in as soon as possible.   University of Louisville women's basketball coach Jeff Walz will again be the featured speaker with team members also present (who are not in class).  Tickets for the event are $30 each on a first come, first serve basis.  You can call the U of L special events office at (502) 852-0706. As long as several of the players are able to make a speedy enough recovery from earlier injuries they will maintain and improve upon the ranking.  Otherwise, I have total confidence in their ability to do as well or better as the season progresses.

GOLF

The Louisville women's golf team will host the annual Cardinal Cup Monday, Sept. 17 and Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky. The Cardinals will host UTC, ETSU, UNC Wilmington, Illinois State, James Madison, Akron, Cincinnati, Maryland, Georgia State, Missouri, Bradley, UNC Greensboro, Charleston Southern and Rollins College for a 15-team field with 12 individuals also competing.

The teams will play 36 holes on Monday with an 8:40 a.m. shotgun start and 18 holes on Tuesday with an 8:40 a.m. shotgun start.  Information is directly from the University’s Official Golf Page located at http://www.uoflsports.com/sports/w-golf/spec-rel/091512aab.html.

Golf Tournament Update:

The University of Louisville women's golf team leads the field with a score of 591 after two rounds in the Cardinal Cup held at the Cardinal Club Course in Simpsonville. The Cardinals shot a 294 in the first round and a 297 in the second round to move up four spots to take the lead. Cincinnati is currently second with a score of 596. Missouri and Georgia State are tied for third with a score of 599. Sophomore Emily Haas currently leads the field.

CHEERLEADING

It is possible that this season on Glee we will be seeing authentic Louisville Cheerleading uniforms and swag.  The producers of the show have requested items for main character Santana, played by actress Naya Rivera.  Last season she announced that “she was headed to the Derby City after receiving a full cheerleading scholarship to U of L. The show also gave a shout-out to the Cardinals during the episode, saying the school has one of the top cheerleading programs in the country”.

Cheerleader Basic Requirements:

·         Incoming freshman ARE eligible to try out.

·         Transfer students with a minimum GPA of 2.0 are eligible to try out.

·         Current U of L students must be enrolled full-time (12 hours) to be eligible to try out.

·         Try-out packet must be submitted at the first round of auditions with a $40 fee.

·         There is NOT a point system. The coach makes the final team selections after advisement from current and/or former captains.

Lola Arslanbekova was selected as the Louisville Student-Athlete of the Week.

Louisville wins the Louisville Invitational by beating Miami and Lola with 21 kills and nine digs was voted as MVP. Teammates Kaitlynn James and Brooke Mattingly join her on the all-tournament team. Volleyball Promotions

Friday Sept 21 at 7:00 is Alumni Night at the YUM! Center.  Members of the UL alumni association can gain entry to the game against DePaul for $2.00. The squad is #10 in the nation in the latest Volleyball poll.

The Louisville women's soccer team earned a 2-0 road victory over DePaul on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field.  With the win, the Cardinals improved to 6-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in BIG EAST Conference action, while the Blue Demons dropped to 5-4-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in league games with the loss.

NASCAR RACING NATIONALS

While I am aware that Nationals stockcar racing with NASCAR is not a University of Louisville women’s sporting activity – In this 40^th anniversary year of Title IX I could not resist a shout out to Brad Sweet who on Saturday drove car # 38 in the Nationwide Series Dollar General 300 and helped to remind us there are still all too many folks out there that just can’t handle dealing with females who are attempting to be as successful as others in formerly all male dominated sports.   It is sad but on Saturday, while a lap down from the leaders, Brad blocked Danica Patrick for a number of laps and did not allow a standard courtesy pass until it was too late for her to challenge moving from the 12 spot to possibly a top 10 finish.  Way to go Brad!

Cardinal Couple has been invited to set up a booth at this year’s Central Cardinal Club Holiday Boutique and Fashion Show. The event takes place Tuesday, Oct. 16th. from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the PNC Club at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.  There are a lot of neat silent auction items available for viewing or to place a bid on. Paul and Sonja will be distributing flyers and business cards, talking women's sports with whoever stops by. and offering people a chance to register for a piece of Cardinal memorabilia that we're giving away. Others of us who periodically contribute to the blog will be dropping by also.  If I can’t get finished with my laundry I can always bring it with me to hang dry.

                                                             SHE'S OUR ANGEL 

Angel McCoughtry made a 2nd quarter apperance at the UofL v UNC football game wearing her Olympic Gold Medal and getting a massive, standing ovation from the 55,000 in attendance. She also tailgated in the lot with Cardinal fans before the game and all this after leading her Atlanta Dream squad to a victory Friday night. 

The Dream is firmly ensconced in third place in the WNBA Eastern Division and will begin playoff battles after two more regular season tilts.

BASKETBALL SCHEDULE

Anyone who follows the Louisville Women’s basketball knows that the long anticipated 2012-2013 schedule is now published.   A quick scan made it immediately obvious that it will be much easier to be an actual attendee of home games.   Gone are the barrage of mid-day work week games and the weekend actually features some of the games which are more of a broad fan based interest. It is great to have a local team where nine of the games are of such interest that they will be nationally televised.

HOW IT WAS

One reader is taking us back to Ursuline Academy in the 1950 's.  Girls play was conducted from a court which was marked on a room in a campus building basement with beams that hung down across the ceiling.  Those whose shots had arches found themselves ducking as the balls rebounding back at them.  One quickly learned to create a home court flat shot but game strategy primarily focused on shooting layups which worked great as long as you followed through by targeting the end of court walls open doorway instead of the water cooler which sat to the left of the basket.

Anonymous wrote: We had a deal set up years ago with a popular drive-in restaurant where they would pay our referees with gift certificates to their restaurant. Not sure how "legal" this is/was, so I'm not naming the restaurant. It was a popular place, though and referees would always request to work our games at home in basketball because of the set up. And, we seldom got very many "bad" calls.  Somewhere in Wisconsin

And from Skinny Pete: I played my high school basketball in a small western Kentucky town where the gymnasium was not large enough to have a full length basketball court. We had no center court line, just two lines on the court that were the distance of what half court was on a regulation court. This was confusing to "big city opponents" and we used it to our advantage quite frequently for ten second calls and "over and back" with our press.

We also had a second floor bleacher area that hung over the sidelines out of bounds areas and our students would sit in this area and harass opposing players who would attempt shots from the corners of the court. Imagine 75-100 screaming kids directly over you when taking a corner jumper from the sidelines. Not too many went in.

Consolidation eventually closed our school, but we had a pretty good home record because of our gym and the smallness of it. The town really showed up for these games and I remember one time our mayor actually ran out onto the court to argue a call made by the refs. He got tossed from the gym! Those old brick walls could really magnify the sound and it was a tough place to play for visitors not used to it.

UL Football History Whose Contributor Shall Be Nameless Unless They Volunteer.

I remember the days of going through the northwest corner gate at Cardinal Stadium dragging coolers, buckets of chicken and anything else we could think of and getting in by just flashing our student ID. We would take the fraternity bell and ring it in the end zone after Cardinal scores and we'd just drive the pickup truck in, park a few yards behind the end zone and tailgate right there. We had a player from Memphis once score a touchdown in front of us, toss US the ball instead of to the referee and he asked us for a beer and piece of chicken.

(Sure...I'll volunteer it. Ol' Paulie himself and I remember some of those days still.)

WEEKLY EVENTS

Overall  the women had a powerful week.   Total count shows field hockey with two wins and one loss, soccer balanced out at 1 win of 2 matches while volleyball hit the perfecta with not only two wins with no losses but were also the winners of the Big East/Big Ten Challenge.

Golf is participating yesterday and today in the Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colorado.

The VolleyCards have now beat No. 10 Kentucky, No. 11 Purdue and No. 20 Illinois.

This weekend is extremely busy with most of our women’s teams playing out of town.  Fortunately Volleyball is playing this weekend in the Louisville Tournament at the YUM center.   Play begins Friday against Middle Tennessee at 7:30, UNLV at 11:00 on Saturday then again that evening at 7:30 against Miami.  Also on Saturday there is all day Rowing at the G. Garvin Brown III Rowing Center.  It is Red/Black day so if you attend, dress for success.  All of these activities can be squeezed between the men’s 3:30 Cardinal Stadium football game against North Carolina.

For those of you who are able to recover from the weekend games, there is always Women’s Golf being played at the Cardinal Club on Monday.

The golf team completed 36 holes Monday in the Ram Classic hosted by Colorado State. They are in third place...Emily Haas with a 144 and Katie Petrino with 146. Both are in the top ten.

SOCCER

Women’s soccer ( 12^th ranked)against Notre Dame is set for Friday at 4:00 ET and is being shown on ESPNU with UL bringing in a 5-1 record to the match.  Last week Junior Angelika Uremovich scored twice to lead the 12th-ranked Louisville women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Toledo.

 posted nine saves in the win.   U of L takes their 4-2 record into East Lansing Michigan on Friday when they play Central Michigan with either Michigan State or American University on Sunday.

BASKETBALL PRACTICE START DATES

First date of practice guidelines for women has been adjusted which allow teams to start preseason practice 40 days ahead of their season opener. U of L’s first game is set for November 9 against Texas A & M at the YUM! Center so the first allowed date of practice counts back to around September 30. Teams are limited to 30 practices during the extended time frame.

BASKETBALL THIS AND THAT!

UL women are reported to be 3 deep at almost every position which will feed perfectly into Jeff’s upbeat and up tempo style of play.  As one gets slightly winded there is another to step into her place which makes for exciting and crowd inspiring entertainment.  As an old and broken down former player... there is nothing that provides an extra unknown internal spark than the opponents turnover which developed into a score from your teammates defensive pressure and extra effort.  While we read that others want to try again this year to play the “up pace pressure ball” which was discarded early during last season as ineffective – Louisville has been successfully playing this exciting style of ball for a few years now.  This team is already going to be terribly exciting and competitive this year but RECRUITS PLEASE TAKE NOTE: If next year we can continue our upbeat style of play while adding some additional height in the  front court with a great point/wing guard rotation in the back, we will be totally unstoppable.

Imani Wright and Brianna Ruiz were on campus last weekend.  Saniya Chong, Alexandria Harris, Emmonie Henderson and Mercedes Russell are reportedly still anticipated with                                                                             

Mercedes' visit scheduled for the weekend after her Tennessee visit.  Hopefully her saving us until last is a good sign as every UL fan is primed to hear the good news of her signing with a team and fan base that is already primed and ready for a championship.  I believe that she would be the key to a long list of additional signees which  we are prepared for as fortunately, the scholarships are available. 

Sara Hammond has tweeted that she has returned to her 00 high school playing number.

It’s a day late but it appears that yesterday was Angel’s birthday.  Better late than never on the shout-outs.   Happy Birthday Angel!

(Excellent work from Sandy today! The prospect of such talent hitting the Louisville campus and combining with the existing talent makes for a very exciting time for Cardinal basketball fans. One bit of sad news to report...softball pitcher Chelsea Leonard's injury to her knee in the Michigan game will keep her sidelined for the softball season...she'll continue to serve as possibly a student mgr. or assistant )
