Cardinal Couple Thursday Spectacular

(OK, maybe not so very spectacular, but we do have a few interesting tidbits to talk about.)

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

( Staff Columnist Jeff McAdams with the report today on women's golf and NCAA Volleyball. Last seen, he was wandering the hallways of the Cardinal Couple Worldwide Corporate offices with a 5-iron in his hand, volleyball under his arm and dressed in nothing but a volleyball net and souvenir program for the NCAA Championships...yelling either "Fore" or "Set" randomly.)

- Tennis in the ACC

- Volleyball Championships have Arrived

- Volleyball All-Americans Announced

-  Hammond to miss Colorado game.

Tennis in the ACC

Paulie asked me, in our look at how our athletics teams match up with our upcoming ACC competition, to cover Tennis.

Tennis...that's the sport where they use that funny scoring system, right?  I must admit to not following Tennis much, so let's take a look at the ACC standings and see where they stack up in overall rankings.

For comparison, the Louisville Women's Tennis team finished up last season 13-10.

In the ACC, last season:
1. Duke (29-3, 11-0)
2. North Carolina (24-7, 10-1)
3. Miami (FL) (20-5, 9-2)
4. Clemson (17-9, 8-3)
5. Virginia (19-10, 7-4)
6. Georgia Tech (16-12, 6-5)
7. Florida State (13-11, 5-6)
8. Virginia Tech (12-13, 3-8)
9. Boston College (10-13, 3-8)
10. NC State (8-16, 3-8)
11. the departing Maryland (7-15, 1-10)
12. Wake Forest (3-18, 0-11)

So that looks like we fit in around 7th or 8th.  That's a little daunting.

Let's see how current and future ACC teams are looking in the ITA Top 25:
3. Duke
8. North Carolina
9. Miami (FL)
15. Virginia
19. Notre Dame
20. Georgia Tech
25. Clemson

I gotta say, that looks pretty impressive.  Looks like yet another sport that will challenge our Cardinals to greater heights. Mark Beckham has two of the finest in the nation in Rebecca Shine and Julia Fellerhoff and they will lead the Cardinal charge.

VolleyBall Championships have Arrived

If you have followed my ramblings here at all this fall, you know that Louisville has the honor of hosting the NCAA Semifinal and Championship matches.  These matches kick off tonight at 7pm with 3 seed Texas and unseeded Michigan.  The nightcap should get started around 9pm with top seed Penn State playing 5th seed Oregon.

Our Cardinal team finished off the year with a 30-4 record.  Of those 4 losses, 3 of them were to teams that have advanced to the Semifinals (Penn State, Texas, and Michigan)...which takes a little of the sting out of them, I should think.

Oregon arrived in Louisville early in the week, on Sunday, which is somewhat understandable since they would have the most jetlag to overcome.  Because of their early arrival, they borrowed the Cardinals practice facility at the Yum! Center on campus.  They also are apparently borrowing our pep band as theirs apparently couldn't make the long trip.

The other three teams arrived Tuesday.  No news if any of the other teams are borrowing a band from Bellermine or elsewhere.

(Editor note: Timmy the Intern and Co-Co offered to bring a kazoo and harmonica to support the Texas squad musically. They haven't heard back from them yet. They do a great version of "Louie, Louie" and "Stairway to Heaven".)

One roster note of local interest.  Penn State, perennial volleyball powerhouse, has one Deja McClendon as an outside hitter.  Deja is from Louisville, playing her high school ball at duPont Manual.  Deja's younger sister, Maya, has signed to play with the Cardinals next year.

Tickets are still available at the KFC Yum! Center, though the word is that they have generally sold well.  The NCAA, and UofL are looking to break the all-time attendance record for a volleyball match, so come on down and check out the action.

Volleyball All-Americans Announced

Lola Arslanbekova was named a 2nd team All-American, while Gwen Rucker picked up a 3rd team nod.  Caitlin Welch...only a junior, remember...got an honorable mention.

Congratulations to these three and thanks for representing Louisville so well.

Also congratulations to Gwen Rucker for graduating today with a degree in Actuarial Science.

( Great report today from Jeff McAdams and he'll be keeping us in the loop on the action in the KFC YUM! Center Thursday and Saturday...as four teams enter, but one only will emerge as the National Champion.)

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Our prayers go out to Sara Hammond and her family, who just lost their grandmother. Always tough to lose a family member and you all are in our thoughts during this tough time.

Hammond will not accompany the Lady Cards on their trip to Colorado for the Friday night game against the Buffs.

One of the most beautiful and thoughtful statements that we've ever heard about a death of a loved one goes like this. This is for you and your family, Sara.

Your pain is over
Although we still ache
You'd tell us not to
You'd tell us to make...

Every day a bright one
Each moment quite dear
Because we never really know
How long we'll be here.

Your life was special
You touched so many
The lives you changed
Were grateful and plenty

We'll meet again
Of this I am sure
While you're gone, we'll carry on
We will endure.

So, fly with the Angels
Smile down on us below
Thank you for helping
All of us grow.

Volleyball takes huge win over Marquette

.
MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Volleyball beats previously undefeated Marquette in four games.

-Shine, Fellerhoff advance to quarterfinals.

-Swimming finishes fifth in SMU Classic.

Lola's 24 kills lead Cards to road win

The University of Louisville Volleyball team knocked Marquette out of sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST with a convincing 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19 win over the Golden Eagles in Milwaukee Sunday.

Leading the way for birthday girl Anne Kordes' squad was the irrepressible Lola Arslanbekova with 24 kills. Huge efforts from Emily Juhl (a season high 13 kills) and Caitlin Welch (22 digs) helped the Cards advance to 20-3 and a league leading 9-1 in the BIG EAST. Marquette falls to 18-4 and 8-1 in conference play.

The Cards fell behind early in the first game but battled back to gain a 14-13 advantage against MU. The Golden Eagles zipped off a 8-2 run after that before a rowdy crowd to go up 21-16. Despite scores from Juhl and Kaitlynn James, Marquette prevailed by five in the opener.

In the second game, Louisville broke open a close 11-8 contest with a 9-2 run to double up the Golden Eagles at 20-10. Louisville prevailed with the eight-point victory...Lola getting five kills, Juhl four and Tanya Lukyanenko adding three kills and three blocks.

After the break, the two teams battled closely before Marquette broke open a 13-13 tie with five unanswered points. That necessitated a Kordes timeout, and it worked for the Cards...finishing the match with an 11-1 run to win by four. Juhl's four kills led the Cards.

In the final game, Louisville held a 13-7 lead before Marquette countered with a 7-3 run to climb within two at 16-14. From there on, the teams exchanged mini-runs...Louisville getting a game ending 6-3 finish to take game and match.

Fellerhoff, Shine reach ITA quarterfinals

Louisville's top two singles players, Rebecca Shine got to the quarterfinals and Julia Fellerhoff reached the semifinals of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette, IN. before bowing out.

Shine fell to Brynn Boren of Tennessee 3-6,6-2,6-2 and Fellerhoff lost to #2 seeded Kata Szekely, also from UT, 5-7,7-5, 6-1.

"Julia and Becca had an incredible tournament. Neither one of them had advanced to the quarterfinals before, so it was a huge accomplishment for Louisville Tennis. They keep adding to their resumes as the two best players to play here at Louisville" - Mark Beckham, head women's Tennis coach.

FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Softball hosts Georgetown for final regular season home series starting Saturday.

-Shine, Fellerhoff get tennis awards

-Jeff Walz Lady Cards Camps and Clinics info

-Louisville WBB tidbits.

The University of Louisville softball team (44-2, 14-2) will host Georgetown (19-29, 3-12) in the final regular season home-stand of the season for the Cards. Two games...beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday...and one game Sunday.

Louisville sits atop the BIG EAST leaderboard by one game with six BIG EAST games remaining. USF is 13-3 in BIG EAST play, Notre Dame 10-3 and Syracuse 12-4.

Georgetown comes to Louisville after hosting and dropping a double-header to Villanova on Wednesday 4-1 and 4-3.

After the Georgetown series, the Cards will play a non-conference game in Knoxville against Tennessee next week on Wednesday and then conclude the regular season with three games at St. John's over Derby weekend.

The BIG EAST Tournament is a single elimination affair that will begin on Thursday, May 10th at Notre Dame. The top eight teams in the regular season standings participate. If it were starting tomorrow, here's how the seeds and games would match up:

#1 Louisville vs. #8 St. John's
#2 USF vs. #7 Connecticut
#3 Notre Dame vs. #6 Rutgers
#4 Syracuse vs. #5 DePaul

DePaul is the only team to beat Louisville this year...taking two out of three in Chicago back on March 31st. and April 1st. Syracuse is last year's tournament champion and returns All-Big East pitcher Jenna Caira.

We'll have full coverage of Cardinal softball action this weekend and throughout the BIG EAST tournament and NCAA Tournament here at CARDINAL COUPLE.

Congratulations to women's tennis team sophomores Becca Shine and Julia Fellerhoff on being named to the All-BIG EAST Team.

Coach Mark Beckham has this to say about the honors bestowed on the duo:

"It's good to see that the other coaches in the conference have a lot of respect for Julia and Becca's games. This is a great reward for Julia, since she missed the beginning of the year with a broken foot. She worked really hard to get back and had a successful season. This will definitely motivate her for next year. Hopefully, she'll stay injury-free and push for player of the year. She definitely has the ability to do it. Becca is unbelievable. She came to us from Augusta, GA. and nobody really knew who she was but I thought she could be really good in time. She is way ahead of schedule, for her to have already been ranked nationally in singles and doubles. To only be a sophomore is a quick progression. Now that she has been named BIG EAST All-Conference, I can't say enough good things about her. She is a special player, for sure."

UofL finished tied for third in the BIG EAST Tournament...going in as a #6 seed. They upset #3 seed Syracuse but were defeated by #2 seed Notre Dame in the semi-finals.

"OK! Hustle that firewood in here
and someone start making S'mores!"
So...who wants to go camping with Jeff Walz? Mind you, this won't be a  tents, campfire, roasting weenies and marshmallows type of camping...it's three women's basketball skills camps for individuals and teams.

The fun begins June 4th. with a Day Camp for grades 3-8. It goes thru June 7th.

Two other camps will also be offered...a team camp June 8-10 with JV and Varsity Divisions and a Elite Skills Session for grades 7-12 on June 14th.

You can contact Mary Beth Whitaker at 852-8355 or mbwhit08@Louisville.edu for pricing and more information.

Also, here's a link for additional info:

Lady Cards Camps and Clinics

Sonja laughing about the whirlpool
and how much "Ben-Gay"
she'll need tomorrow.
We hope Walz will also have a 'past their prime' refresher camp someday for ex-high school players over 35 who still think they 'got it' and thought they were 'all that'. Sonja would dominate in that one. Unless A.J. or Valerie Owens Combs showed up to play. And, we're not saying either of them are over 35. I learned a long time ago, when it comes to things not to bring up...

Never reveal or ask about a woman's age.

Charlie Strong holds a day long women's football skills and learning camp each year. We're thinking a day- long WBB camp just might draw a few ladies.

*******************************************

UofL WBB fans will be glad to know that Monique Reid has received her notice from the NCAA that she can officially play in the upcoming season...we're hearing from a very credible source.

We knew she would. We think it's great! Watch Mo & Co. lead the Cards past the Elite Eight!

We also have fielded a few e-mails about Jeff Walz's sudden interest in players from overseas.

Talent is talent, no matter if it comes from your backyard over overseas. Both Monny and Amanda got serious experience playing for their national teams while in high school. Experience is good, folks.

We remember a few years ago when Tom Collen had Yuliya Tokova, Valeriya Musina and Tatjana Boston on the roster...all foreign players in high school. They were valuable contributors to the Cards during their stays and just because foreign players are being recruited doesn't mean that state-side talent isn't available.

Good basketball player are good basketball players...whether they're from Russia or Russellville.

MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE...Golf, Tennis, Softball and Mercedes

.
MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Women's golf finishes 16th in North Carolina

-Women's tennis falls to Tulsa

-Softball in the BIG EAST

-Mercedes narrows list

-Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic needs a overhaul

-"Rally around Bobby" planned

The Louisville women's golf team finished their three-day meet in Browns Summit, NC with a 16th place finish in the Bryan National Collegiate tournament. They posted a team score of 941 for the 54 hole event. Tennessee won with a score of 882, defeating Duke in a playoff.

Emily Haas is from West Jessamine HS
Senior Candice Wiley led the Cards with a 73 in the final round. Her three-day total of 232 matched that of Louisville freshman Emily Haas, who fired a 77 Sunday.

Red shirt freshman Katie Petrino carded a 81 on the final day and finished three strokes back of Haas and Wiley for the three days with a 235. Freshman Sara Karlsson's 80 on Sunday gave her a 245 total. Maria Castallanos toured the final round with a 78...good for a 247.

A lot of youth contributing on this year's team. Last year's leader Anna-Karin Llungstrom should be back from thumb surgery to compete in the BIG EAST Championship April 23-25 in Orlando, FL.

*******************************************

Rough outing for Louisville tennis yesterday in the Bass-Rudd Center, falling to #26 Tulsa 7-0.

"We ran into a very good team today. Sometimes you just have to give credit to your opponent for playing so well." --UofL head women's tennis coach Mark Beckham.

Fellerhoff lost 6-3,1-6,6-3 Sunday
Julia Fellerhoff took her singles opponent to three sets before falling. The rest the Cardinal singles participants went down in straight sets. The loss snapped a five-match UofL winning streak. Louisville is 10-8 for the season. The BIG EAST Championships are three weeks away and Beckham indicated that the Cards might be a squad no one wants to face because of their improvement since the season began.

2013 UofL women's basketball target Mercedes Russell has named the ten school that are in the running for her services. An impressive list, for sure.
The Springfield, OR star is the #1 ranked recruit for the 2013 class and from what we've seen of her on video, it's a just and fair assessment. Click the link below to see who "made her cut".

Top 10 for Russell

Quite frankly, the Kentucky Derby Festival committee has dropped the ball on this event. Other high school Classic events have become more popular and the festival's inability to land UK future stars has killed the attendance.

Also, moving the event to Thurs-Fri hasn't helped. Pulling the Night of the Future Stars from Bellarmine University and sending it to New Albany High School was disappointing as well. We understand the reasoning, since several future IU ballers were taking part in the slam dunk, three point shooting and 2 on 2 competitions...but it isn't the "New Albany/IU Night of Future Stars" and more than a few probably chose not to cross the Sherman Minton bridge and watch.

Add a girls game to the event.
Maybe having just one UofL future star hurt attendance. Maybe they need to ADD A WOMEN'S GAME to the activities -- like the top Classics do. Maybe they need new leadership, organizational staffing and a hook-up with a major sponsor. Maybe they're tired of our advice...but the numbers don't lie.

WE didn't attend this year. It's the first time we've missed this annual event in over 20 years. And, honestly...besides not getting together with friends we usually attend with...we didn't miss it.

Also, we used to receive several e-mails each year from the marketing folks who promote the Classic...some well in advance of the two-day event...with news, features and stories. Those disappeared this year, too.

Get a new strategy, KDF. This used to be one of the top two post-season high school basketball classics.

It isn't anymore.

Finally, supporters of embattled University of Arkansas head football coach Bobby Petrino have planned a support rally Monday night at 7 p.m. in front of the university administration building. We couldn't pass on this.

Here's the "Top 10" on the rally.

10. Supporters leave notes taped to the steps explaining why they didn't show up

9. Everyone shows up on motorcycles with 25 yr. old blondes riding on the back.

8. Bobby shows up nailed to a cross and wearing a crown of hog tusks.

7. The movie Pinocchio is shown immediately after the support rally.

6. Louisville and Atlanta Falcons fans hold a counter-rally at the Fayetteville airport. (In secrecy, of course)

5. John L. Smith is flown in from Weber State just in case things get out of control.

4. A blonde, vestal virgin from the football staff is sacrificed at the rally.

3. Feeling slighted, the University of Arkansas basketball team schedules a "Support Mike Anderson" rally at the same time over at the basketball arena.

2. Former UofL women's basketball coach Tom Collen shows up on a moped not wearing a helmet.

1. It's a hoax...designed to draw attention away from Petrino's secret decision to become the new head coach at UK.

Lady Cards battle obstacles away from the court

.
TUESDAY WITH THE COUPLE:

-LADY CARDS TAKE TO THE OBSTACLE COURSE AT FORT KNOX FOR TRAINING AND TEAMWORK

-YENNEY BIG EAST PLAYER of the WEEK

-FELLERHOFF WINS SINGLES AT OHIO STATE

Thanks to CARDINAL COUPLE reader Kenny S. for finding and sharing this great article about the University of Louisville women's basketball team facing the obstacle course at Fort Knox. Click the link below to take you to the story. Go Asia!

Lady Cards battle obstacles away from the court TheNewsEnterprise.com

**********************************************************************************

CARDINAL freshman mid-fielder Erin Yenney has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week for her outstanding efforts in two Cardinal Women's Soccer wins last week. She scored the Cards first goal in the 3-0 win over Seton Hall.

Yenney has started in all 17 games this year for the Cards. Louisville will end the regular season Saturday in Cincinnati with a 7 p.m. game against the Bearcats. The Cards have clinched a #2 seed in the the BIG EAST Tournament and will host a quarter-final game at Cardinal Park on Sunday, Oct. 30th. against an opponent yet to be determined.

**********************************************************************************

Julia Fellerhoff won the singles division yesterday at the Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational held at Ohio State. She downed Arkon's Zara Harutyunyan 6-4, 7-5 to take the title...her fourth championship in the college ranks. Louisville's Becca Shine fell to Harutyunyan in the semi-finals 6-2, 6-3...preventing an all-UofL final.

Fellerhoff, a sophomore, is one of several strong performers for Mark Beckham's women's tennis team this season. The Cards did well in the Ohio Valley Regional in Memphis recently and should be a major contender in NCAA women's tennis this season.

Lady Cards on road vs.Villanova today

SUNDAY SUPER @ CARDINAL COUPLE:
.

-David Watson: Cards chase elusive road win.

-Women's track & field at Virginia Tech Elite Meet.

-Tennis falls to Akron

-OUR SUPER BOWL picks

(CARDINAL COUPLE Special Correspondent David Watson looks at the Lady Cards tilt this afternoon at Villanova. Pass the chicken wings and when do the halftime commercials begin?)

The University of Louisville has safely arrived in Rocky's home town to enter the ring against the Villanova Wildcats. They'll do battle on Super Bowl Sunday in front of maybe 400-500 fans against a woeful..but still dangerous Wildcat team. 'Nova is 8-13 on the year and 0-8 in the BIG EAST. So...why are they dangerous? Because it is a road game for Louisville. The Cards haven't exactly been Mel Gibson road warriors in the 2010-11 season. A more suitable description would be Steve Martin and John Candy in 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles.'.

The Cards are 5-4 in BIG EAST action. They're 1-3 on the road. They won against a Cincinnati team that would have a hard time beating the 'over 40 'bunch of guys I occasionally play hoops with. Even full court..which we avoid like the plague...we win. Granted, the road losses have come against three top 25 teams (Connecticut, Notre Dame and Marquette) but Louisville's trips out of town are as dicey as Lindsay Lohan's chances of redemption.

Look at Louisville's propensity for going on runs. The Cards have 18 runs this season of 12-0 or better. None have been on the road and only two against anyone of importance (17-0 against Rutgers and 12-0 versus Kentucky). Don't look for 'a case of the runs' today against Villanova. Do look for Villanova to play a patient, ball control offense. They'll try to pound the ball inside against the Cards and won't hesitate to fire the three pointers if Louisville packs it into the paint..

If I seem overly concerned about this '0 for BIG EAST' opponent, it is because this is a game LOUISVILLE simply has to win if they want to participate in the NCAA Tournament this year. A loss to a cellar dweller, even if it is in the BIG EAST, won't set well with the NCAA Selection Committee when it comes time to knocking schools off the bubble. It would also strike a major blow to the Cardinals' confidence to drop this one.

Most of the nation will be fixated on the Super Bowl today. The LADY CARDS, though, are faced with a super battle of their own today. Let's hope they can produce a knockout punch in the city of brotherly love this afternoon...

*****************************************************************************

Khadija Abdullah took shot put honors and Ahlvia Spencer dusted the competition in the 400 meters yesterday in the Virginia Tech Elite Meet in Blacksburg, Va. For Abdullah, it was her fourth straight win of the season. Also faring well in the shot were D'Ana McCarty (4th) and Cinwe Okoro (5th). Spencer, a freshman, posted a season best of 56.13 in the 400.

Louisville returns to action next week in the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, AR.

***********************************************************************************

Julie Fellerhoff took wins in singles and doubles competition against Akron, but the Cards fell 4-3 to the Zips at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Mandy Brown teamed with Fellerhoff in the doubles win. Becca Shine and Sarah Miller also won in doubles competition. Sarah Miller took her singles match in three sets. The Cards lost the match, though, when Shine fell to Akron's Angelina Jogasuria 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 in the final game of the day. Louisville is 5-1 on the season.

***********************************************************************************

The CARDINAL COUPLE staff has crunched the numbers, stats and Doritos and offers our SUPER BOWL selections. (We don't recommend that you use them has a wagering guide).

.
PAUL likes the Steelers 27-24. He still feels remorse over booing William Gay while he was a Cardinal and wants to hear Gay make another crazy celebration scream like he did the last time the Steelers took the trophy. He still hasn't forgiven him for jumping offsides against Rutgers.
.

SONJA thinks Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers is cuter than Big Ben Rothliesberger...so she's going with the "Pack" 17-14. She also likes ex-Card Jason Spitz better than Gay. She's watching for just the commercials... .

TOMMY BOY refuses to believe that the Bears lost to the Packers in the playoffs and thinks Big Ben will lead the Steelers to a Super romp....33-13. He also thinks the Detroit Tigers still have Al Kaline on the roster and that the world is flat.

.

We put two sheets of paper on the ground in front of BILL THE GOAT and he ate the one that had Pittsburgh written on it first. He also head butted Tom seven times, so we're guessing he thinks Pitt wins by seven. We think he may have also head butted William Gay a few years ago.
.

The CARDINAL CHIMPS played a simulation game out in the Parrish House parking lot a few days ago and the Chimps dressed in the Steelers jerseys were leading 24-14 before CoCo stole the football and tossed it on the roof. Works for us...anyone got a ladder?
.
DAVID WATSON doesn't care who wins and probably won't watch the game because Indianapolis isn't playing. WE pressed him for a pick, though...and he muttered "Here we go Steelers, here we go." Hooisers, go figure...
.
CARDINAL DOMINANCE managing editor SHANNON RUFFRA failed to respond with a pick. WE believe he's still at Mulligan's celebrating the UofL men's basketball win last night and UK's loss to Florida. WE can't blame him....
.

.
