Cardinal Couple Thursday

Thursday Cardinal Couple

( Jeff McAdams...with the Thursday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE ...continues his fascination with sports that sticks are used in by catching us up on Field Hockey signings and Lacrosse's dominating win over Detroit. BE sure to catch his sparkling commentary and witty quips on the weekly broadcasts of CARDINAL COUPLE...when he joins Jenny O'Bryan and myself Saturday 11 a.m. for our pre-St. Patrick's Day hour-long celebration of Cardinal athletic events that have taken place in Ireland. It could be a short segement. We've got a backup plan, though...Jeff's busily rehearsing the lyrics to "Danny Boy" and will sing the song on the air with Bill the Goat and THE WALKING DEAD actors Merl and Daryl. You won't want to miss it!)

Field Hockey Signing Day Update

We've reached the finish line of the Field Hockey signing updates with the sixth and final announcement of signed recruits.  This weeks recruit comes to us from Putnam Valley, NY.  I don't think it would be fair to call Putnam Valley a suburb of New York City, but at only about an hour's car drive north of midtown Manhattan, I suspect it still falls under the sphere of influence of the Big Apple quite a bit.

Erin McCrudden will be joining us in the fall with a string of accolades and honors, including four years worth of experience in the USA Field Hockey program on the Futures and Futures Elite teams.

Erin was a three sport athlete at Putnam Valley High School, playing Field Hockey in the fall, Basketball over the winter, and Lacrosse in the spring.  Clearly we're getting a great all-around athlete in Erin.  Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to find out whether that "u" in her last name is a long "u" sound, or a short one.

To wrap up, the 6 member signing class for Field Hockey consists of;

from Eastern Regional High School in Voorheers, NJ - Gianna Perrone, and Stephanie Byrne
from Assumption High School here in Louisville - Hailey Netherton
from Penn Manor High School in Pequea, PA - Shannon Sloss
from Shawnee High School in Medford, NJ - Elina Pereira
from Putnam Valley High School in Putnam Valley, NY - Erin McCrudden

Lacrosse Beats Up On Another Team, and Mother Nature

28 degrees and snow didn't slow down the UofL Lacrosse attack against Detroit yesterday.  Only allowing 9 shots by Detroit, Louisville won by a resounding 17 point margin, 19-2.

The Cards shut out Detroit in the first half while scoring nine.  Here's a name you're probably getting used to hearing...Nikki Boltja scored three, with two contributions each from Erika Eipp and Courtnee Daley.  The nine in the first half were rounded out by Jamie Redding and Colleen O'Malley.

Three of these goals were scored within a two and a half minute span.

Katie Oliverio and Kaylin Morrisette got into the action in the second half with two shots finding the back of the net, while Nikki Boltja picked up another pair.  Colleen O'Malley struck again in the second half.

A little extra recognition for Carissa Corbett who got on the board for the first two scores of her sophomore campaign, and Kelli Gerding, who claims her first mark in collegiate play.

Kellie Young's team continues their epic road trip with a visit to Philadelphia to play Drexel with the start set for Sunday at 1pm.

YOUR ATTENTION. PLEASE!

Jeff Walz and the University of Louisville Women's basketball team cordially invite you to join them Monday night at the KFC YUM! Center beginning at 6 p.m. for a selection show watch for the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament drawings. Fun for all ages and we're trying to get permission to allow the S.E.P. Lady Chimps basketball team to scrimmage the Lady Cards after the show ends. Funny, but Jurich and Walz won't return our calls on this matter. Must be busy...

Have you purchased your 1st and 2nd Round NCAA Tickets yet? The event is being held at the KFC YUM! Center, you know...and Louisville will play on Sunday March 24th and probably Tuesday March 26th as well if they win their opening game.

The Cards are being projected as a 4th or 5th seed, depending which prognsticator you check out. Come enjoy the thrill and excitement of women's college basketball with your Lady Cards!

Tickets are available at www.ncaa.com , the KFC YUM! Center ticket office and more information is available at www.gocards.com . Be sure to catch our exclusive interview with Coach Walz Saturday morning on our radio show on Crescent Hill Radio!

www.crescenthillradio.com

Having a large, Cardinal-friendly crowd to see our seniors in their final apperances in the KFC YUM! Center is important in many ways and the type of turnout that Louisville can get for this huge event could have a HUGE impact of what other NCAA Women's basketball events Louisville is awarded down the road. The tickets cost a little extra, sure...but are your Lady Cards worth it? WE definitely think so and urge you to "tell a buddy and take a friend" to see UofL quest for the national championship.

Paulie

Thursday Cardinal Couple - Letters, We've Got Letters

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

( CARDINAL COUPLE columnist Jeff McAdams puts the pen to paper and sings signs today's column before faxing it to Co-Co...who promptly delivers it to Bill The Goat for a tasty mid-morning snack. Here at CARDINAL COUPLE, we do a lot of singing, not so much signing anymore since Timmy The Intern fed most of our writing utensils to Billy. )

Apparently yesterday was National Singing Day...though why so many people were so gung ho about their favorite choirs, I'm not so sure.  Signing?  Not singing?  Oh, well that's different.  (With apologies to Emily Litella).

Yes, yesterday was the beginning of the spring signing period, where athletes sign and submit their National Letters of Intent to the school of their choice.  This process was enacted to give prospective student athletes a way to turn off the deluge of communication from college coaches in their recruiting efforts.  Although, it appears to have also given the student athletes the forum to make grand pronouncements and garner massive amount of sports media attention...at least for a few sports.  By signing a National Letter of Intent, the student athlete is put off-limits for further recruiting efforts.  The other significance to the NLI is to allow the schools to publicly speak about the recruits.

In addition to Football, however, yesterday started the signing period for a number of other sports, notably for us here at The Cardinal Couple:  Field Hockey, Soccer, Track and Field, and Cross Country.

Field Hockey

Gianna Perrone is the only prospective student athlete, outside of Football, that has been confirmed as submitting an NLI to Louisville.

Gianna is out of Eastern Regional High School in Vorhees, New Jersey in the Camden, NJ/Philadelphia, PA metro area.  Eastern has quite the reputation as a Field Hockey powerhouse, most recently by being ranked as the number one team in the country for the past two seasons.  Eastern also holds the national record for consecutive wins at 153 and has won 14 consecutive state championships in New Jersey.

Louisville Field Hockey coach Justine Sowry has apparently signed another 5 players, who will be announced in the coming weeks.

-- This has been the first Signing Day in several years that your affable Co-Owner Paulie hasn't been involved in a Signing Day Party at the Parrish House with Louisville Sports Report for Cardinal Football. That's probably because the Parrish House has been vacated and the new tenant hasn't been determined yet. It still didn't prevent a few of us from going down there, though...and signing (and singing a bit as well) each other's shirts, newspapers and court-ordered summons documents out in the middle of Boxley Avenue. We haven't determined how well Gianna Perrone can sing yet...maybe she'll stop in for Timmy The Intern's weekly karaoke at the Fischer's caboose. Yup, slow Wednesday night. --

Friday Cardinal Couple --Field Hockey faces challenges in ACC

.
FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Cards Field Hockey goes to premier conference.

- Hoopin it up!

With Louisville's entry into the ACC down the road, we've been giving reports over the past few days on what the Cardinal Women's athletic team will face there.

Louisville's field hockey team faces...without a doubt...the biggest challenges and upgrade of any of the Cardinal sports squads. Men or women. Consider these facts:

-- Since 2000, the ACC has had a representative in the championship game every year.

-- Since 2000, the ACC has won 10 national championships in field hockey. Maryland (who is leaving) has five, Wake Forest three and UNC two.

-- Since 2000, two ACC teams have played against each other for the national championship eight times in the final game.

Impressive (and quite scary) huh? In 2012, Princeton broke the ACC's 10 year hold on the national title by defeating UNC.

There are only six ACC schools that play field hockey. UNC, Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia, Boston College and Maryland. The conference adds Syracuse ( a perrenial powerhouse in BIG EAST Field Hockey) next year and then Louisville...to increase it to a seven team league. Pittsburgh does not field a team (surprising, when you consider what rabid regular hockey fans the Pittsburghian natives are). Neither does Notre Dame.

Louisville's Trager Stadium is familiar ground to ACC field hockey teams. The Final Four has been held here in 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2011. Each year an ACC school won and the last three title games in Louisville were an all-ACC final.

Louisville beat Wake Forest last year in field hockey. In Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons finished fifth out of sixth in the league (1-4) and 9-11 overall.

Justine Sowry has her work cut out for her to increase the Cardinals talent and players to meet the level of competition. And, for added fuel on a already bright flame...former UofL field hockey coach Pam Bustin is the skipper at Duke.

Going to the elite conference should definitely help Sowry in recruiting. Hopefully, the Cards will hit the ground running in 2014 and have a great opening year. With Syracuse gone in 2013, the main competition left for Louisville grabbing a championship titile in the BIG EAST is UConn and Providence. ODU (Old Dominion) joins BIG EAST Field Hockey in 2013.

Welcome to the big time, Cardinal Field Hockey!

Field Hockey faces must win at Providence

.
FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Post-season on the line at Providence for Field Hockey

-Football in a showdown with UC

The University of Louisville Field Hockey team travels to Providence, R.I. for a Saturday noon match that carries serious post-season consequences.

In short, if the Cards win, they're in the BIG EAST Tournament. A loss drops them into a three-way tie potentially with Rutgers and Villanova. The tie-breaker looks to be more complicated than figuring out ObamaCare or Mitt Romney's route to the ocean from Iran.

Louisville (11-7, 2-3) is on a three-game win streak, last defeating #22 Ohio State. They handled the Friars easily last year in Trager Stadium 6-0. The Cards lead the overall series 8-1.

Amber Thomas leads Louisville with nine goals this season and Becca Maddock follows closely with eight scores. Goalkeeper Erin Conrad allows a scant 1.85 goals per game.

Providence is 3-1 in their last four games and sports a record of 9-7 on the season...3-2 in the BIG EAST. They're automatically qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament as a third seed...but a loss to Louisville would drop them to the fourth seed.

Speaking of the BIG EAST Tournament, it will be held here in Louisville at Trager Stadium. Semifinal games are next Friday and the championship will be played Sunday. The other participants in the Big  East Tournament are top seeded UConn and Syracuse...who face off this weekend to determine who will win the regualr season title.

Good luck to Justine Sowry's flock as they fly north to cook the Friars!

v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v6v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^

With no women's athletic events scheduled on campus today, we would draw your attention to a big football game being played at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The undefeated Louisville Cardinals take on one-loss Cincinnati at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

A contest that has sold out the Pizza Oven. Five things we like about tonight's matchup...

1) UC's quarterback's name. "Munchie" Legaux. Munchie Let-go. Seriously? Got to be one of our favorite opponent names since the days of Baskerville Holmes and Ace Custis...
2) Evening football. Gives one a chance to get stuff done during the day and still get out and tailgate a few hours. Friday is even better, we can now go watch the men's bb scrimmage tomorrow.
3) They play for "The Keg of Nails". That's just a tough-sounding award. Makes me want to grab a ladder and a hammer or something. Ooh-rah!
4) The payback factor. UC beat Louisville last year in Paul Brown Stadium and "Munchie" says he's a better QB than Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater. Harumph!
5) A chance for "two". Louisville Volleyball goes to UC for a Monday match. Chance to beat the Bearcats twice in several days appeals to us! Goooo CARDS!

Angel Update
Angel McCoughtry prepares for what arguably are the most important games of her career as one of the 12 best women’s basketball players in the world as a member of the USA Olympic team. For two weeks she is participating to play in what she calls “the most important and prestigious sporting event in the world”.   The team opens against Croatia on July 28 in her first Olympic Games.  Jeff Walz has said that her “explosiveness will be invaluable to Team USA this summer”.

Her all-around strong and versatile game play should make her a major contributing member to a team which features 12 top five WNBA draft picks with including Angel, seven of which were 1st round picks.  Angel's take is that “We have egos, too, but it's in a different format." and is “glad to not have to play against them for once."

Atlanta was defeated by the Los Angles Sparks Sunday with a final score of 79-63.  The Dream appeared to have the deck stacked against continuing their six game win streak against Los Angles after playing to a double overtime game (100-93) against Phoenix on Saturday then running into an 8-1 Sparks home record.  They were also without the services of Angel McCoughtry, one of 12 US Olympic Team members who is reported to be suffering from a sprained medial collateral ligament.   The next event for the Olympic Team is an Exhibition by the USA National Team vs Brazil on July 16 at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.

Volleyball Season Tickets
While we are anxiously waiting the beginning of the women’s 2012-2013 basketball season we need to keep in mind that volleyball is just around the corner.  The Active Ankle Challenge starts the home season on August 24-25 with a August 29 KFC YUM! Center match against Kentucky kicking off regular season play.
This is a reminder to all that the Volleyball team this year will play 15 home matches at the KFC YUM! Center with season tickets now available (see http://www.uoflsports.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/062812aab.html for details)  The team already ranks in the top 25 in the nation for attendance but we need to see a rise to at least the top 10 now that instead of standing room only situations there will be great seats for everyone.  Season ticket packages include Reserved Sideline Club seats at $80 each and guarantees ticket holders reserved lower level seats for every match.
Bring not only yours but also your neighbors kids as youth season ticket packages begin at only $25 each and are available in any lower level section. Fans also can purchase a Family Four-Pack that includes two adult and two youth reserved tickets in any available lower level section for $210, which is less than $4 per ticket.
Single tickets sales begin August 6 but season ticket holders receive benefits such as access to the arena clubs, an invitation to the season ticket holder appreciation reception with Coach Kordes during opening weekend and opportunities to win autographed volley ball and official team apparel.
Season tickets are available by calling the Louisville Athletic Ticket Office at (502) 852-5151, online at UofLsports.com or in person at the Student Activities Center ticket office between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Women’s Basketball Attendance 2011-2012
Women’s NCAA basketball attendance sets all-time high as again the 11 million mark was exceeded with record highs for Divisions I and III were repeated for the 2nd consecutive year.  As expected Division I led the way with > 8.1 million in attendance.  Once again, Louisville was runner up – this year with an average attendance of 10,670 (which we absolutely plan to surpass this year). Thanks to Gary Johnson of NCAA.org http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/NCAA/Resources/Latest+News/2012/June/Womens+basketball+attendance+sets+all+time+high.

Field Hockey
Quick Quiz.   State two facts you know about the University of Louisville Field Hockey Team.  I failed, how about you?
For some of your answers, try this webpage http://www.guide.provations.com/louisville/louisville2011fieldhockey#pg6 where you can get to know head coach Justine Sowry, a Sydney Australia native who’s Alma Mater is South Australia.  Her remarkable background is too impressive to condense onto this page but take the time to check out her link as well as that of the team in their media guide found at http://www.guide.provations.com/louisville/louisville2011fieldhockey#.
The University of Louisville also features a fall Field Hockey schedule which opens with the Sherrill Brakmeier Classic at Trager Stadium which begins on Friday August 24, 2012 against Northeastern at 6:00 p.m.  Play continues on Sunday the 26th at 1 and 1 p.m. with Northwestern/Miami Ohio. Play continues until November 3-4 when the Big East Championship is held at our Trager Stadium facility. The complete schedule is available at http://www.uoflsports.com/sports/w-fieldh/sched/lou-w-fieldh-sched.html.
“Mrs. Brakmeier” was a much loved daily fixture in the UL women’s athletic department and field hockey coach back in the dark ages when I was a student at UL.  She still can be seen at campus events cheering on the student athletes and admirably representing the University's women’s athletic events on a regular basis.  Students of that era know that her 3rd child was the University of Louisville field hockey. Much can be learned about Mrs. Brakmeier and her history at http://www.uoflsports.com/genrel/071904aag.html.

Forget about the ball. Look into my
fingers. You are getting sleepy,
very sleepy...
Thanks to Steven Maikoski/USA Basketball we know:
Her favorite food is Fruit or chicken, favorite class is Math and that she writes with her left hand and shoots with her right.

Congratulations to Mercedes and “Team Concept Heat” as the winners of the “End of the Trail” girls elite youth basketball tournament which ended yesterday in Oregon City, Oregon.

(Editor's note -- The talent level at the End of the Trial was off the charts. Not sure how many college coaches were at the event but you probably could have thrown a bucket of water from the top of the seats and drenched a dozen or so.

The recruitment of Mercedes goes on at breakneck speed. She's become a highly sought-after commodity. For her sake, I hope she gets a few moments of peace away from the fray and gets a chance to enjoy her senior year of high school. )

Louisville Women’s Athletics fans have no shortage of events to attend on campus this fall.

With the end of the NCAA Softball Championship elite NCAA players joined forces to play on the US team and participate in the International Softball Federation games (ISF) which is the international governing body for the sport of softballWithout a current slot in the Olympics, this sport can only hang out in the International Leagues where it is believed that reentry into the Olympics will require a merging of the ISF and the IOC (International Olympic Committee).  For any of you who are lucky enough to see any of these games – there are a few differences between the NCAA and International rules.
Some of those changes are:
-In the NCAA pitches must stay within pitching lanes, the pivot foot must stay in contact with ground but in ISF the pitches can be outside of the lanes, the pivot foot can come off ground but there must be a 2 second pause.

-The NCAA run rule is that the game ends when one team has an 8 run lead after 5 innings.  In the ISF it varies as the lead must be 15 runs after 3 innings, 10 runs after 4 innings or 7 runs after 5 innings.

-In ISF the batter must keep one foot in the batters box between pitches but not in the NCAA.

-ISF outfield fence deminsions are a standardized 220’ where in the NCAA the distances can range from 190-230’.

The most visual difference is that in the NCAA players can wear long pants or shorts but in the ISF only shorts are allowed as they claim they want to differentiate from baseball (which is sort of odd since the IOC approves of the stand long pants but somehow they are not confused for baseball players).   When on base paths they either go to sliding pants or knee pads but I personally saw more head first slides.   Sounds more like a power struggle than a true concern for confusion or for the skin on the player’s legs.

College Recruitment Expenses
I found a site (http://businessofcollegesports.com/2012/01/20/conference-recruitment-expense-series-wac/) where Alicia Jessop has compiled Recruitment expenses data for all sports, as were available, from the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12, SEC and the Sun Belt.  I am not certain as to the group but in a series by BusinessofCollegeSports.com ...men’s and women’s college recruiting budgets were analyzed and posted.   Data from the Department of Education was used where the top 50 recruiting spenders were shown.
Columns showed total recruitment expense budget, amount spent per team on average and amount spent per player on average. The figures are somewhat suspect, though, as the data doesn’t tell how many student-athletes a school recruited in a given year so the total amount of student-athletes at each school was used.  Nothing I would want to wager upon but at least all were compared using the same formulas:

fhttp://businessofcollegesports.com/2012/01/23/conference-recruiting-expense-series-top-50-spenders/ reports the “top 50” overall spenders with Louisville sitting at a solid 25 sport with a reported total expenditure of $1,128,645 with $342,071 of that indicated as being spent on the womens' teams.

.
CARDINAL COUPLE MONDAY

-Thomas nets goal in Cardinal Field Hockey win.

-Volleyball loses in YUM! to Panthers

-Women's golf in Las Vega$ Collegiate Showdown

The University of Louisville Field Hockey team won a defensive battle against
the Indiana Hoosiers yesterday at Trager Stadium 1-0 in the final regular season home game. Amber Thomas found the net off of a Haley Jurich feed for
the only score of the contest.

Cards face Northwestern Sunday to conclude the regular season
The teams battled to a scoreless first half tie, defense the name of the game here, with only seven shots on goal between the two squads (IU 4-3). More of the same in the second half...with IU getting only one chance to score...late in the game. Goalie Erin Conrad deflected an Audra Hellman shot with less than a minute remaining to preserve the Cardinal win.

Three seniors were honored on Senior Day. Caitlin Collins, Heather Stevens and Hayley Turner leave the Cardinal Field Hockey squad after four years of valuable service. Turner leads the Cards in goals scored this year, Collins has three goals and three assists and Stevens three goals and five assists.

"The senior class has been phenomenal. As first-year coach here, I couldn't have asked for a better senior class. They really bought into the change and the culture. We're not done yet, we're going to try and finish strong and win the first round of the BIG EAST tournament."  -UofL head Field Hockey coach Justine Sowry.

Louisville (10-7, 3-3) will participate in the BIG EAST tournament in Syracuse from Nov.  4-6.

Tough loss for Cardinal volleyball yesterday in the KFC YUM! Center...falling to Pittsburgh 3-1 in front of over 2,000 fans and a regional television audience that watched on WHAS-TV. The Cards fall 3-1 in sets of 25-21, 19-25, 24-26, 20-25.

"The team effort was not there today." -Anne Kordes, UofL head volleyball coach.

The Cards started out well, battling early with the Panthers before taking a 19-17 lead late and outscoring the Panthers 6-4 down the stretch for the 25-21 win. Lola with five kills in game one.

It turned against the Cards after that. Pitt jumped out to a early 10-4 lead and Kordes was forced to call both the team's timeouts to right the ship. Louisville did manage to cut the lead to 19-16 late...but saw the Panthers

outpoint them 6-3 down the stretch. Lola with six kills in this one.

Louisville trailed for most of the third game before rallying to tie it at 19-19. The Cards held a 21-20 advantage briefly but Pitt tied it at 24-24 and then saw Louisville misfire on two kills attempts to squeak out a two point victory.

The Cards started out strong in the final game, leading by five early...but the Panthers rallied to tie it up at 13-13. The Cardinal defense could not produce after that and Pitt used a 9-4 run to go up 22-17. The Cards tried to fight back and managed to get within three but Pitt produced the final three points of the game and took the win.

Louisville will have a few days off before their next match...a trip to Tampa to face USF on Friday.
