Thursday Cardinal Couple -- Collins, Fowler named All-Americans

.
THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Tori Collins, Taner Fowler named Softball All-Americans

-"My Favorite Cardinal Womens Sports Moments" -- Arthur Albiero

Congratulations to senior pitcher Tori Collins and sophomore designated player Taner Fowler on their selection to the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association All-American third team.

A total of 54 players from 33 different schools have earned the honor of being selected to one of the three teams. The selections were made by NFCA member coaches from each region.

Collins went 25-2 for Louisville this season and had a 1.30 ERA. She fanned 186 batters in 179.1 innings. She finished her career at Louisville third on the schools all-time list for strikeouts (590), wins (86) and saves (10). She also had 23 career shutouts, fourth best in Cardinal softball history.

Fowler batted .366 for the Cards in 60 games and led Louisville with 12 home runs and 52 RBI's. In addition to her designated hitter role, she also spent time at catcher for Sandy Pearsall's squad.

Louisville finished the season with a 55-5 record, the most wins ever for a Cardinal softball team. They were also the BIG EAST regular season and tournament champions.

Nevins and USF survived the
Super Regionals
Previous Cardinals selected for All-American honors are Lacy Wood (2006), Kristen Wadwell (2009) and Melissa Roth (2009-2010).

Other BIG EAST players making the 2012 All-American Teams were Sara Nevins (USF), Amy Buntin (Notre Dame), Kirstin Verdun (DePaul) and Jenna Caira (Syracuse).

We kick this feature off with Arthur Albiero, the head Men's and Women's Swimming Coach at UofL.  Arthur is in his ninth year as the head coach of UofL swimming. The Cards won both men's and women's BIG EAST Championship titles in the 2010-11 season and the women repeated again in 2011-12.

Here's his favorite Cardinal Womens Sports moment:

"Sophomore swimmer Gisselle Kohoyda (Midland, MI) finishes fourth in the 200 yard breaststroke at the Women's NCAA Championships !!...leads team to NCAA top 25, along with two-peat BIG EAST Championship team title."

More on her outstanding feat can be found at the link below.

(David Watson chimes in on the 62-58 UofL win over Villanova)

The announcers Sunday were raving about 2200 attending the Georgetown vs. Rutgers game in D.C. They'd probably go into a coma if they saw almost 11,000 fans...as was the case when the Lady Cards downed 'SweeneyNova' by four Saturday.

What dastardly deeds did David
do in the high seats?
And it was the Sweeney show for the Wildcats. Schooling the Cards on the baseline, in the paint, on the boards and over the skies of Louisville. Sara Hammond watched her go by her several times Saturday but I hope she was watching even closer than that. This is the type of player Hammond could become if she picks up the foot speed a little bit, learns to drive and use the backboard and drops a few pounds. No one stopping her. Reach out and do the work, Sara. You have seen what the future could be. Go get it.

Games at the KFC YUM Center are always entertaining. We chose to traverse to the upper seats for this one...hadn't seen one from there ever. Loved the kids around us making a ton of noise and flashing their signs...despite the fact that no one on the lower deck knew we were up here.

Sitting up high does have a few advantages. I could see the Cards spacing very clear offensively and it needs some work. If Asia Taylor is going to lead the "charge of the light brigade" through the paint and to the hoop for this Louisville team...clear out and give her some room, Lady Cards.

I also watched the way Villanova works on offense sets to free up Sweeney. Very effective, organized and exacting. With a little practice and experience, the Lady Cards could do the same. Louisville had an almost certain "two" or trip to the line when Monique Reid would get the orange thing inside. Same with 'Nova. Say, could someone ask Mo to share that ability with Asia the rest of the year? She can have it back for the 2012-13 season.

Finally, make no mistake about it. This is Shoni Schimmel's team. Even though the Wildcats did a very passable job in trying to contain her, "Sho-time" came through. I don't quite understand why Coach Walz's didn't play her sister Jude a bit more with "Show". They seem to work well together in the offense. Maybe it's because they'd played together since they crawled out of the cradle. I on't know, but it makes sense to me.

Who knows? Walz doesn't need advice from a guy who sits in the 300 level. I, though, need advice on how to get an escalator like the one in the YUM Center to put adjacent to my Uncle Scott's grain silo.

Those who worried about Cierra Warren's scant minutes shouldn't. She'll get the full workout against DePaul (as long as she can keep the whistles quiet). Katherine Harry and Anna Martin are unleashed pit-bulls in the paint. Big players in the BIG EAST. The battle will be a good one. Maybe Sara will get a chance to mix it up with them.

(Then again, it's Walz. The "big guy" has a plan. It'll work. We wait excitedly.)

( David..good luck with the escalator hunt. I suffer from slight vertigo and can't ride on the thing or sit in 300 level seats with my eyes open. Thank goodness for elevators and press passes. I miss my buddies in Sec.115...but they understand).

*************************************************************************

Now that all of the teams in the BIG EAST have played at least eight conference games...it's time to look at some standings and make some wild and unfounded guesses about the second half of the season.

Harry Perretta, the affable Villanova head coach, nailed it down the fairway when he said after the game that the 3-12 positions were still wide open for the second half of the season. Especially since Rutgers got unceremoniously thumped by Georgetown yesterday.

Let's face it. Either Notre Dame finishes with no conference losses or one...because no one will beat them unless UConn can in the XL Center at the end of the year. UConn will finish second, with one or two losses...depending on the outcome of that Feb. 28th. game. It's a two horse match race for the regular season title.

After that, it gets interesting. With the Rutgers loss, five teams have either 2 or 3 losses. Rutgers still has UConn and Notre Dame to face. So do Louisville and St. John. Georgetown and West Virginia just have one of the top two left to play. Those are eight automatic losses.

Just behind these are USF, DePaul and Providence with four losses each. Out of the four, one would think DePaul might have a slight advantage to climb. The Louisville games won't be easy for them, they have to go to South Bend and play the Irish...but five out of the eight final game for them are at home and include rollovers like Cincy, Villanova, Marquette, and Syracuse. USF has a tougher road. They travel to St. John and Notre Dame and still have West Virginia and Providence to deal with.

Paul would like to see "those
dad-gum Blue Demons" lose
Tuesday.
The 12-16 spots will belong to Marquette, Syracuse, Cincy, Pittsburgh and Seton Hall...probably in that exact order. Louisville catches a break...they have three of these (SU, Pitt and SH) left to play and should be OK in these. Add in DePaul twice, at West Virginia and hosting UConn and Notre Dame...and it's not hard seeing the Lady Cards go 5-3 or better the rest of the way.

Is 11-5 good enough for 3rd. place in the BIG EAST regular season standings? Can Rutgers, St. John's, Georgetown or West Virginia duplicate or top that?

Rutgers (6-2) still has Notre Dame, UConn, St. John's, West Virginia and Villanova left to tangle with. We're thinking they'll handle Seton Hall, Providence and Marquette without too much trouble. If the Scarlet Knights can win three out of the five against the Irish, Huskies, Red Storm, Mountaineers and Wildcats...they could finish 12-4. Gonna depend on how quickly Khadija Rushdan can return after the nasty head bump she received yesterday at Georgetown. They carted her off on wheels. She did return to watch...but concussions take time. And, Rutgers has Notre Dame, Connecticut, St. John and West Virginia as their next four. It's possible that could equal four straight losses.

St. John's has a tough road remaining. Breathers at Pitt and Seton Hall before taking on USF, Rutgers, Connecticut West Virginia, Villanova and Georgetown to finish the season. Only three of these at home. It's not hard to see them finishing 4-4 in their final eight...which would put them at 9-7.

As for Georgetown...gotta like the Hoyas chances to grab third place. Currently at 6-3, they host Seton Hall, Providence and St. John's...and go to Cincy, Connecticut, Villanova and Syracuse. We can see five wins here pretty easily, maybe six if they can defeat the Red Storm to end the season. 12-4 is within their reach. 11-5 very possible.

West Virginia has their work cut out for them. Despite four in a row at home and five of the remaining eight in the Coliseum...they aren't easy ones. A trip to USF could be rough for them. Louisville, Notre Dame, Rutgers and DePaul visit after that and we can't see them doing any better than 2-2 in the home stand. Then, they go to St. John's before finishing at Cincy and hosting Pitt. 4-4 in the final eight is the guess here and would put them at 9-7.

OF course, this is the BIG EAST. Upsets are common. Who would have figured the beat down Georgetown put on Rutgers yesterday?

Some great conference games early this week:

Tuesday
Louisville at DePaul
Notre Dame at Rutgers

Wednesday
West Virginia at USF.

Stay tuned, the second half of the BIG EAST schedule is going to be a brawl and a ball. We'll preview DePaul against Louisville tomorrow. Have a great Monday!

WVU gets the BIG 12 slot...WBB Tipoff Luncheon today...Swimming and Diving fall to Tennessee...19 in a row

.
FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE:

-BIG 12 says...WVU, not Louisville

-Sold out luncheon today for Lady Cards

-Tennessee defeats Cards in swimming

-RAPID REDUX wins 19th. in a row

Make room, guys. The Mountaineer
is joining you...
The BIG 12 has chosen, and it not Louisville. The Mountaineers. Knowing how these kinds of things work, there will probably be more to this than we currently know. Conference re-alignment is like sitting through your niece's piano recital...it never seems to end.

Surprising that they chose to announce it at 7 a.m. Must have been a sleepless night for the decision makers.

Next step? In Jurich we trust.

******************************************************************

Congratulations if you got a seat at today's University of Louisville women's basketball tip off luncheon today. The event is sold out. CARDINAL COUPLE will have two of our writers in attendance, though, if you can't go...and we'll look forward to their reports and observations.

The Lady Cards will open their season Sunday with an exhibition game against Lindsey Wilson. Most preseason polls we're seeing have Jeff Walz's team ranked in the top ten nationally.

The Cards return their top two scorers from last year in Monique Reid and Shoni Schimmel. Four starters from the team that upset Xavier in the NCAA tournament are back on campus, and three very talented freshmen join the mix.

The schedule looks to be a tough one, with pre-conference tilts against powerhouse Texas A&M, ACC member Florida State, in-state rival Kentucky and a trip to the Pacific northwest for two games. The roster is deep, though and competition has been spirited in the pre-season practices. Toss the ball in the air and let's get it started!

******************************************************************

The University of Louisville lost a dual meet in swimming and diving yesterday to nationally ranked Tennessee. The women fell 183-117 to the Vols in the Ralph Wright Natatorium on campus.

Hannah Gadd placed second in the 1 meter diving event. Fanny Lillestrom won in the 200 meter breaststroke for the Cards. The women failed to win any other events but had a lot of close second and third place finished against UT.

******************************************************************

5 year old RAPID REDUX won his 19th. straight horse race yesterday...splashing past four foes in the sixth race at Laurel Race Course in Maryland. The streak began on October 13, 2010 and has taken him to seven different race tracks and he's had nine different jockeys on board for the wins.

Talk about playing well on the road...

None of his wins have come at any Kentucky tracks...his owner prefers to keep him close to the Maryland and Pennsylvania racing circuits...but an attempt to get him to ship into  Churchill for a fall race this year is picking up steam.

He isn't racing against the best competition out there and he's definitely not Breeder's Cup quality...but nineteen in a row is nothing to sneeze about.

Yesterday's win was a typical effort for the gelding. Took the early lead, was well rated and relaxed through the first quarter by jockey J.D. Acosta (who's been on board for four of the wins) kept to the rail as the horses hit the stretch and gradually pulled away from the field.

The nineteen in a row ties him with Peppers Pride and Zenyatta for most consecutive wins on North American race tracks. He paid $2.60 on a $2.00 win ticket yesterday.

Field Hockey romps Providence, Football beats Rutgers, Women Swimming in 4th.

.
SATURDAY CARDINAL COUPLE:

-Field Hockey shuts out Providence

-Cards win in Papa! 16-14 over the Rut-girls

-Swimming in 4th at SMU

The University of Louisville Field Hockey squad clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Field Hockey tournament yesterday with a convincing 6-0 win over Providence. Hayley Turner and Heather Stevens the heroes here, with two goals each in the white-wash.

Turner turns two for
Field Hockey Friday
The Cards struck early in the contest, Turner sending a rebound shot into the net with just over four minutes gone in the game. Turner got involved in the Cards second score also, feeding Stevens a pass that made it 2-0. The Cards closed out the first half with a another score by Turner and led 3-0 at the break.

It was Stevens turn next and she started off the Louisville second half with a goal from an Erin Schneidtmiller assist. Not to be denied, Schneidtmiller got a goal for herself on an unassisted play a few minutes later to make it 5-0 UofL. Elizabeth Vance closed out the scoring for the Cards...who improved to 9-7 and 3-3 in BIG EAST play.

Louisville returns to Trager on Sunday to face Indiana at 2 p.m. It's the final regular season home game for the Cards and seniors Turner, Steven and Caitlin Collins say goodbye to the fans and their teammates.

Big win when it was most needed by the Cards yesterday and another shut out effort out of Erin Conrad.

Rutgers players (left) kneel in respect to Connor's
injury. Photo by C.Springer, UofL Card game.
Scary moment yesterday when Anthony Conner went down after colliding with Mohamed Sanu on the first play of the second quarter during the UofL football game against Rutgers. Action was stopped for about 15 minutes while Connor was carted off the field. He suffered a broken neck but is not paralyzed.

The Cards got a throw for six from Touchdown Teddy Bridgewater and a key interception with less than two minutes left in the game by Dexter Heyman to win 16-14 over the guests from Piscataway. Louisville goes to 3-4 with the victory, Rutgers drops to 5-2.

Conner had feeling in his arms and legs and was able to move them. He is a senior cornerback who transfered to Louisville from Florida.

The University of Louisville women's swimming team is in fourth place in the SMU Classic. Stars yesterday were Hannah Gadd, who won the 1 meter diving event and fourth place finishes by Abby Chin (400 IM), Eszter Povazsay (100 back) and Fanny Lilliestrom (100 breast).

The coxswain faces the rowers and gives them
instructions as they row...
Sophomore coxswain Ellen Fawcett will guide the Canadian National Team in the Would Under 23 Rowing Championships scheduled for July 20-24th in Amsterdam, Netherlands. As a sophomore at UofL this past season, she guided the second varsity eight boat squad to a second place finish at the BIG EAST Championships and three wins during regular season matches.

Fawcett is a native of St. Catherine, Ontario and received her training at the St. Catherine's Rowing Club...coached by former and current Olympic rowers.

Rowing is a big activity in the province of Ontario...an area which has many lakes and waterways. To make the squad, Fawcett had to endure four weeks of tryouts against the elite of Canada. Being selected over the competition was a surprise for her.

The coxswain is in charge of a boat's direction and navigation. She faces the rowers and shouts out instructions as they row. Hmmm..sounds like my mother-in-law when she's in the car with us...

Good luck to Ellen in the World Championships!

Angel got some help last night in
the Dream's six point win over New York.
The Atlanta Dream finally notched one in the win column last night, getting 27 points and 15 boards from Erika DeSouza and 25 points from Lindsey Harding in a 87-81 win. The Dream rallied from a 10 point 3rd quarter deficit to take a 62-61 lead late in the quarter and held on the rest of the way.

Angel McCoughtry had seven points in 18 minutes of court time. The Dream (3-7) get a week off and will be bolstered by the return of Sancho Lyttle...who has been playing for Spain in the European Championships....when they return to action. Spain went 2-3 in the tournament and did not qualify for the quarterfinals.

It'll be interesting to see if Atlanta retains the services of Courtney Paris...signed to replace Lyttle over her five game absence. Paris has played solid ball for Atlanta and had six points and four rebounds in a reserve role at center last night for Atlanta.

Another piece of the Lady Cards non-conference schedule has been fitted into place....Louisville will travel to Richmond, KY on Thursday, November 17th. to play the Eastern Kentucky University Lady Colonels. It will be EKU's opening game and the Cards first visit to EKU since 1990. Louisville did play EKU in 2005 in Murfreesboro, TN. during the MTSU classic...winning 75-45. The Cards are 17-8 all-time against the Colonels..

EKU head women's basketball coach Chrissy Roberts is excited about the impending matchup:

"Our team, our coaches and our staff are excited to host a program the caliber of Louisville. The Cardinals are one of the best programs in one of the best women's basketball conferences in the nation, and we look forward to playing them on our home court." she commented.

Sara Hammond will have a
large following in attendance
for the Lady Cards game at
EKU November 17th.
Great chance for Sara Hammond fans to make the short drive from Rockcastle County to see the Cardinal freshman and EKU is only a two hour drive from Louisville, in case local Lady Cards fans want to get an early viewing of Jeff Walz's 2011-12 team.

It's good to see that Louisville is making the effort to play some of the in-state schools in women's basketball besides Kentucky. WE still miss the annual matchup against Western Kentucky back in the days when Crystal Kelly (Sacred Heart) led the Hilltoppers. The two teams met seven straight years from 2000-2007 and WKU held a 4-3 advantage in these match ups.

WE'LL never forget the 2007 game at Diddle Arena in Bowling Green...a rowdy affair where hundreds of UofL fans made the trip to see Louisville beat WKU 76-60 in Jeff Walz's first year as Cardinal head coach. Four days later, the Cards travelled to Lexington and defeated UK 80-65 in a classic matchup at Rupp Arena. Angel McCoughtry left the game in the second half after getting smashed over the eye by a UK player going after a loose ball. 15 stitches later, McCoughtry returned to the court and helped seal the win for the Cards...

Softball splits, Swimming and Diving wins BIG EAST

SUNDAY @ CARDINAL COUPLE:

-CARDS split in softball

-CARDS sweep BIG EAST SWIMMING Championships

-CARDS lead after 1st round of BIG EAST track CHAMPIONSHIPS

-Commentary and comments on LADY CARDS WBB win over USF.

Louisville softball split Saturday in Tuscaloosa, AL. in the 'Bama Bash...beating UT-San Antonio 2-1 and falling to Alabama 9-8.

In the first game, the Cards fell behind early to the Roadrunners when Tori Collins gave up a solo shot to Molly Fischer in the top of the second. Louisville countered with a run in the third when Jennifer Esteban reached on an error and scored on a Alicja Wolny single. The Cards scored the go ahead and final run in the fourth...getting a double from All-American Chelsea Bemis and pinch runner Tesha Payton greeting the umpire on a Maggie Ruckenbroad single.

Tori Collins turned in a solid performance on the mound for Louisville...fanning 12 and allowing only three hits in seven innings. Bemis had two hits to lead Louisville in batting.

Against Texas, Caralisa Connell got the start and Louisville gave her a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first when Esteban singled, moved to third on a fielding error and wild pitch and touched home on a Kristin Austin fielder's choice. The Cards pushed it out to 3-0 in the second. Jordan Trimble singled, Ruckenbrod sent her to third on a single and a Katie Keller ground out scored her. Pinch runner Katelyn Mann found the plate on a passed ball.

The Crimson Tide made it 3-1 in the top of the third but the Cards fired back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning...Chelsea Bemis drilling a right field fench clearer that scored her and Colby Wherry. Bama crawled back with a run in the top of the fourth to make it 5-2. The Tide added a run in the fifth when Jackie Traina smashed one over the center field fence off of Connell.

Louisville built a seemingly unreachable 8-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Bemis walked and Trimble, Fowler and Ruckenbroad all singled to make it 7-3. Two straight bases on ball scored Fowler for a 8-3 Cardinal advantage.

Alabama came back, though, with four runs in the top of the sixth, getting a solo blast from Keima Davis and a three run shot from Cassie Reilly-Boccia to change the scoreboard 8-7 Cards. The Tide took the lead in the top of the seventh on a two run fence clearer by Davis and Louisville couldn't score in the bottom of the inning.

The Cards fall to 4-5. Collins got the loss in relief of Connell...allowing five runs and five hits in 2 pitched innings. Louisville plays UT-San Antonio Sunday @ noon for their final game in the Bash.

************************************************************************************

Cardinal swim teams swept the BIG EAST Championships in the Ralph Wright Natatorium yesterday and head coach Arthur Alberio was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year. The ladies snapped a 14 year Notre Dame hold on the title, outpointing the Irish 820.5-655.

Therese Bergstrom finished first in the 200-breaststroke for the Cards. Aileen Cole finished a very close second in the 100-freestyle and Eszter Povazsay claimed second in the 200-backstroke. Raine Thompson swam to second in the 200-fly and the relay team of Cole, Breann McDowell, Krissie Brandenburg and Grite Apanaviciute narrowly missed in the 400-relay against the Irish by .34th of a second.

*************************************************************************************

Women's track and field has the lead after Day One in the BIG EAST Championship competition in Akron, Ohio. D'Ana McCarty won the weight throw..an event that the Cards swept the top three spots in and Charachesicia Lockhart leaped to a first place finish in the long jump.

Gabrielle Jackson is currently fourth in the pentathlon and Sarvia Richardson (2nd) and Margert Harris (4th) qualified for the 60 meter dash finals. Richardson also qualified for the 200 meter finals...finishing fifth in the qualifier. Ahlivia Spencer's 5th place put her in the 500 meter finals.
In addition to McCarty's win in the weight throw...Al-Amashi Kendall claimed second and Patrice Gates tossed for third. The UofL squad leads with 42 points...WVU follows in second with 30 and Syracuse is third at 22 points. Action continues Sunday.

JEFF WALZ'S POST GAME COMMENTS after the win over USF:

" Well, I told the girls that we definitely wanted to send you out Jim (Kelch) with a win on your last road trip. It was the pre-game speech..it was all about Jim Kelch...We wouldn't be where we are without you and we appreciate all you've done for the last four years..."

On the win:
"Without a doubt, I was really proud of the kids. It was a win we had to have, a road game that we had to come down here and get. We played well at times today...and at times we didn't. We really were taking care of the ball until the last four minutes and then we had some crazy turnovers that we have to address...but overall I was really, really pleased about the way we played today.

On the 18 turnovers and early low percentage passing by Louisville:
"I thought we took pretty good care of the ball...I know at one point in the game Shoni had nine assists and nine turnovers...but I thought she played a really good game for us.... she had some really nice passes into the post. She goes 6-16 from the field...not a great shooting percentage...but again, she's not taking bad shots. She gets a steal and misses a layup..there could have been some contact. I thought Mo(nique Reid) played as well tonight as she's played in awhile. It's tough...I guess..for people who don't get the chance to see us play on the road..but Mo actually wanted the ball tonight, compared to Wednesday night at Syracuse...where Mo actually kind of hid. It's hard for us to get her the ball when she doesn't want it. Tonight she wanted it and did some great things with it."

On scoring depth:
"We're still trying to find one more great scorer. Tia Gibbs hits a big three there for us in the second half when they started to make a little run at us. I've got to get Becky Burke to do a little bit more than just being a spot up three point shooter for us. I need her to be able to read screens. She came off a screen, a double stacker that we set for her...she was wide open to drive it through on the curl to the basket...but she's always looking to shoot the three. I know she has the game...I've seen her do it at times...but we need to get one more player besides Monique and Shoni to be a creator."

On Keisha Hines' performance:
"She did play well. I get on Keisha sometimes because we actually throw it to her and she passes up a lot of shots. She only took five tonight. I want her to score. We need her to be a scoring threat for us... every night she could get 10 to 12 points for us and if she could do that...Mo is going to get her 16-18, Shoni's going to get 16-18 and we got to get one more to get that 8-10 each night and then we'll have four out there that everyone has to worry about.

On Walz's pregame promise to the team that a win over USF would get them Sunday off:
" I told them that it (Sunday) is an off day. I did encourage the one that did not get to play much that...I personally would get in the gym and get some shots up. That's just me. Not mandatory...it is completely an off day if you want. Like I try to tell them all, though...are you somebody that wants to play basketball, or are you a basketball player?

We love the "basketball player" comment above by Coach Walz! Looking at the basketball played yesterday by the Lady Cards...several things stick out to us. Monique Reid's 11-15 shooting shows that she can be deadly when the Cards run the offense and work to get her open inside. Secondly, five offensive rebounds for the entire game is pitiful. Even though the Cards shot 50%...USF had 22 defensive boards. Only three Cardinals managed to grab a rebound after a Louisville missed shot. 23 chances, five second chances. Gotta improve that.

The Louisville freshmen accounted for 16 points of the 66 Louisville total...all from Schimmel. Walz did not play Charmaine Tay and there was no mention of why she didn't hit the court. Sherrone Vails saw only nine minutes on the court and Antonita Slaughter just two. Sophomore Shelby Harper had her second straight extended amount of time on the court yesterday with 10 minutes after being barely visible for most of the season. WE think Walz had her out there to harass USF leading scorer Andrea Smith. Harper did hit two free throws and get a rebound, assist and turnover while on the court. Smith ended with 16 points, slightly below her season average.

A brief appearance yesterday for starter Asia Taylor. Only 12 minutes of court time after starting each half. One shot, no points, two rebounds and fouls for the sophomore. Different approaches for different opponents we're guessing...but could have more Taylor led to more Cardinal rebounds? Four cards accounted for all but two of the Cards 27 grabs...Hines getting seven, Gibbs six, Schimmel five and Reid four. We'd never question Coach Walz's decision making...mind you. Just an observation.

An announced crowd of 683 watched the event. Not surprising, given the Bulls record and a beautiful Saturday outside in Tampa. The Bulls students are known for their catcalls directed at opposing players and harassment of officials and we could hear plenty of that going on yesterday over the radio. We'll never forget a trip to the Sun Dome several years back when we were vacationing in Florida and happened to go to a UofL men's game down there. Wouldn't have wanted to be on the Cardinal bench that afternoon...the students sit directly behind the benches..in a small balcony type setting and the language and taunts coming out of the section directly behind the Cardinal bench would have made the late George Carlin blush.

A big time match up awaits the Cards Wednesday night when DePaul rolls into town. The Blue Demons grabbed sole control of second place when Notre Dame got spanked by UConn yesterday. With just one conference loss, Doug Bruno's team does face a tough test today against dangerous Georgetown...who comes in for a visit. The Cards play well in the YUM (usually) with a big fan base present and a huge turnout is needed Wednesday night for the DePaul game. Bring a buddy, tell a friend..load up the kids and that neighbor who tells you they'd like to catch a ladies game and get down there!!! Tip is at 7. Wazoo Sports is televising it locally if you can't attend...

Swimming leads, Softball falls, Sypher sentenced..

SATURDAY at CARDINAL COUPLE PRESENTS:

-Swimming still #1 after Day 3 of Championships

-Softball drops two in 'Bama Classic

-Sypher gets 87 months in extortion case.

-Watson's take on South Florida hoops vs. Lady Cards

-And the Panera winner is.....

-Pitino's Cards cage the Huskies in the YUM

The University of Louisville's men and womens swim squads still lead after Day 3 of the BIG EAST Championships. 'Sharin' Karen Sypher, pictured above, had to miss the competition...trying to swim out of her own cesspool down at the courthouse yesterday. She sank...

The women's swim squad has a commanding lead over Notre Dame 623.6 to 430.50 as the final day of splashing starts today. Several Lady Card swimmers touched the wall first in races yesterday in the Ralph Wright Natatorium. Let's look at the action:

Raine Thompson took the women's 100-fly with a new conference record 53.10. The Cards also had good finishes from Mary Mittel (5th), Esther Povazsky (7th) and Lacy Bobo (8th) in the final.

Therese Bergstrom captured the 100-breast stroke, defeating last year's champion from Notre Dame, Samantha Maxwell. Cardinals Giselle Kohoyda, Aileen Cole and Kameron Chastain also picked up points in the event.

The Cards also got a third in the 400-IM, second in the 200-free and second in the 100-back. The highly heralded 400 medley relay team of Bergstrom, Thompson, Cole and Krissie Brandenburg just missed against the Irish...who set a new BIG EAST record with 3:35.89.

The men go into the final day clinging onto a 591-570.5 lead over the Irish..

Tough Friday for Sandy Pearsall's softball team in Tuscaloosa, Al. at the 'Bama Bash. Losses to Syracuse and Alabama drop the Cards to 3-4 in the young season. Against the Orange, Louisville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning...Alicja Wolny's double scoring Jennifer Esteban. 'Cuse roared back, though, with a 3 run blast from Stephanie Watts in the top of the third. The Cards got back within one and had a chance to win it in the top of the seventh. Tanner Fowler, Esteban and Katie Keller reached on infield singles to load the bases with two outs. An error got pinch runner Chelsea Jordan to the plate but Syracuse reliever Jenna Caira stopped the rally...leaving the Cards one run short. Caralisa Connell (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs, five hits and getting five strikeouts in seven innings. The 3-2 win pushes the 'Cuse to 5-0.

In the nightcap, Alabama jumped on Cards hurler Tori Collins early with four runs in the second inning. A two run double by Kendall Dawson and two run homer from Jackie Traina did the damage. 'Bama added two more in the third and led 6-0 until the top of the fourth when Louisville countered with two runs. Colby Wherry put one over the fence, bringing Katie Keller to the dugout with her. The Tide would add two more in the fourth and fifth innings for the final 10-2 score. Collins took the loss...giving up ten runs, 14 hits and fanning five in 4 innings.

The Cards look to rebound with a noon game against Texas-San Antonio today.

Sharin' Karen Sypher received a seven year, three month sentence for her extortion attempts on Rick Pitino in Federal Court Friday. Her attempts back in 2003 to force Pitino into forking over cash, cars, college educations and a house for her and her kids is going to put the blond bad girl away with no chance of parole or reduced time served, since it is a federal case. Sypher plans to appeal and won't have to start serving the sentence immediately...as was pleaded by the prosecution. Think she takes a southbound to Georgia and dyes her hair black?

WE at Cardinal Couple feel that she got what she deserved. Although WE do NOT approve of Pitino's indiscretion with her, or the fact that money was provided for what ultimately turned out to be a Sypher abortion...what Sypher did, six years later, was much more severe. Her bizarre attempts to present the facts in a totally opposite and implausible reenactment and her equally strange appearances on obscure radio and TV talk shows indicate to us that she needs some serious psychological observation and help. She's isn't the sharpest pencil in the pile and her alleged previous 'gold-digging' attempts and successes on others show us she needs to be sequestered to a place where following the line in an orderly fashion and doing laundry eight hours a day is the agenda. (See 'ya and wouldn't want to be 'ya.)

Hey...she'll be eligible for AARP and Shoney's breakfast bar discounts when she gets out.....

Shoni Schimmel and Monique Reid search for their missing shooting stroke today in the Sun Dome against USF. Our special correspondent David Watson provides his take on running with the Bulls below. You can e-mail David at mrwatsonipresume@insightbb.com if you get extremely bored...

Call me irresponsible or foolish (both usually apply) but I see good things in store for the University of Louisville's womens' basketball team Saturday in Tampa. It's Florida, for goodness sakes, who wouldn't be happy to be there in the middle of February? South Florida isn't exactly the Beast of the BIG EAST this year. They've notched one win in the brutal BIG EAST so far this season. They have a win over Seton Hall. I conservatively figure that my son's Catholic Youth team could give a respectable run for the money against the Pirates.

Andrea and Andrell Smith are the two main horns on a Bulls squad that won't be running with the crowd in the NCAA Tournament. They weren't present for USF's stunning upset over UofL last year in Freedom Hall and they might want to consider heading over to Sanibel Island and collecting seashells instead of suiting up for today's impending rout. Louisville is desperately seeking win # 8 in conference play and they'll get it if Walz can convince the Cards to block out, be patient in the offensive sets and not take a deep sea fishing expedition in the Gulf of Mexico.
.
Say what you want about the road woes for the Cards this year. This is no Marquette, Syracuse or Connecticut that Hines and company are tipping it up against this afternoon. These Lady Bulls (excuse the oxymoron) are not proficient in rebounding, shooting or playing defense. At home or on the road. If Louisville can manage to lace up both shoes, find their way out of the locker room and shoot at the correct basket each half...then they stand a excellent chance of winning.

(David Watson occasionally sends us his views and observations on Louisville sports when he isn't too busy trying to persuade his oldest daughter to attend
Louisville instead of Notre Dame in two years.)

WE'LL HAVE FULL COVERAGE HERE LATER TODAY AFTER THE GAME IS FINISHED
.
A tip of the tap and free Panera Card to Kenneth Stark, Sr. for having this week's winning entry in the random draw. His was the final entry that Bill the Goat tried to eat after a wild night on the Drunken Amish farm. Ken wrote:

"OK. Hope you don't actually have to have a favorite since I have never actually been to one. Maybe a coupon or something free will entice me? If/when I do go to one, it would be the Poplar Level Rd location.
P.S.-love your site!"

Well here's your big chance to break your maiden, Ken! We've got a Panera Gift Card headed your way and we're confident it'll be the first of many trips to Panera for you. We like the Poplar Level Road location, too. Even if we have to tie Bill the Goat up outside before we go in...
.
************************************************************************************* .
We'd be remiss if we didn't offer the Pitino Cards a slap on the back and hearty "attaboy!" following their win over UConn in the KFC YUM Center last night. Gorgui Dieng with a double-double and Peyton Siva with some high flying magic for the 'Ville. 20 wins for Preston and the bunch and even Musburger and Knight gave Louisville some hearty praise on the four letter network. Always great to beat UConn in anything and Louisville has done it twice now this season in men's basketball. Boo-yah!

Softball to Bama, Swimming winning

FRIDAY at CARDINAL COUPLE.
.
-Softball Cards travel to 'Bama Bash.
.
-Swimming leads BIG EAST Championships.
.
-Track signs four.
.
-Uh Oh...here comes the road.
.
-PANERA Contest.
.
The University of Louisville womens' softball team spends the next three days in historic Tuscaloosa, Alabama participating in their second tournament of the season. They'll kick off the activities against a BIG EAST foe...Syracuse....today at 1 p.m. The 'Cuse knocked off Louisville in the finals of the BIG EAST tournament last May in Louisville's Ulmer Stadium 2-1. Ace pitcher Jenna Caina returns for them. The Orange (4-0) have gotten off to an excellent start to the season, winning the Georgia State Tournament last weekend. The bats are working well for the Orange...they outscored opponents Tenn. Tech, Morehead State and Georgia State 33-3 in the four games.
.
Louisville will face Alabama in the second game Friday. The Crimson Tide (5-0) is off to a great start also...winning the Easton All-Alabama Classic last weekend...running up 47 runs against Samford, Alabama A&M, Jacksonville State, South Alabama and Troy. The two teams will meet again Saturday at 4 p.m. and Louisville will have Saturday and Sunday games against Texas-San Antonio while there.
.
Sandy Pearsall prefers to think that this matchup against Syracuse isn't a revenge or payback game for Louisville...she looks at the season ending series with the Orange as payback time...but we're guessing the returning Cards from last season wouldn't mind having a good outing against the tricky hurler Jenna Caina...
.
The Cards (3-2) will most likely use the pitching trio of Tori Collins, Carlisa Connell and Chelsea Leonard again this weekend. Collins had a one-hitter last weekend against Tulsa. Louisville has gotten productive offense power from Alicja Wolny, Jordan Trimble, Jennifer Esteban and Colby Wherry this season and the dangerous Chelsea Bemis, 2010 BIG EAST Player of the Year, is always a threat.
.

.
Day two of the BIG EAST Swimming Championships concluded yesterday with both the Louisville men's and women's squads in first place. Both squads are trailed by Notre Dame in second. For the ladies, a win in the 200 free relay capped off the evening. Aileen Cole, Nicole Landisch, Lacey Bobo and Grite Apanaviciute edged out the Irish in a time of 1:31.44.
.
Cole took second in the 50 free. She was followed by Landisch in third, Apanaviciute in fifth and Bobo and Krissie Brandenburg tying for sixth.
.
Lindsey LaPorte finished sixth in the 500 free for the Cards and Breann McDowell eighth.
.
The Cards got another win when Sarah Andrews took the 200 IM. Stephanie Juncker finished fifth.
.
Action continues today at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.
.

.
Ron Mann, Louisville track and field coach, announced the signing of three athletes to the women's track and field team for 2011. Rachel Serafin is a shot put and discus champion from Pennsylvania and will add to the already strong group of 'throwing girls' on campus. Megan Klein comes in from Lexington and is an accomplished distance runner at Paul Dunbar High School. The Cards also picked up Hannah Cox, who holds the school records at her high school (Christian Academy, Knoxville, TN.) in the long jump, triple jump, pentathlon and 4X200 relays. She also pole vaults. Mann promises many more good recruits are on the way and will be adding Cardinals all the way up thru mid summer.
.
**************************************************************************************
.
Jeff Walz's Lady Cards return to action Saturday...on the road in Tampa to face the South Florida Bulls. Despite just one win in BIG EAST play, the Bulls are a dangerous opponent. OK...enough of the obligatory, complimentary nonsense. The Bulls are horrible. Besides sisters Andrell and Andrea Smith and the occasional sighting of Porsche Grant...they're not a great or talented team. St. John's blasted them by 20 in the latest game down in the Sun Dome. Georgetown, Syracuse, Notre Dame and WVW have 25+ point wins over them. They did manage to beat visiting Seton Hall by four in front of 521 people back in late January and early in the season scored victories over Wake Forest and Auburn...but they're a bottom feeder in the BIG EAST and will most likely view their game Feb. 26th. at Villanova as the only chance left to stay out of the BIG EAST cellar.
.
A four point loss to Pittsburgh on the road and falling by six to Marquette shows that they'll give opponents a tussle at times...but Cincinnati beat them and so did Providence. USF is last in the BIG EAST in scoring defense, field goal defense percentage and 13th in scoring margin, They trail the rest of the conference in three point field goal percentage and are 15th in rebounding defense. If Shoni Schimmel, Monique Reid and Becky Burke have shed the demons that invaded their bodies in Syracuse that caused them to be incapable of hitting a cow in a pickup truck...the Cards should be OK in sunny South Florida.
.
It is the road, however...and the mere mention of walking into an opposing gym for basketball strikes fear into the hearts of most of the Cardinal faithful. When it's away jersey time, the Cards are 2-4 on the year...with wins at Villanova and Cincinnati...which isn't saying much. This one is a "gotta have it" scenario for Walz's bunch if they are going to reach the magical 9 wins in the BIG EAST...
.
WE'RE going to take the high road, though...and predict that Louisville will regain the shooting touch, play inspired defense, learn how to block out and go for loose balls and pull out the win Saturday. May not be by 25+...but any "W" is a good "W" when you play in the best conference in college basketball. Maybe another one on the Monique Reid 'payback' list...USF came into Freedom Hall and gored the Cards 63-60 last year.
.
*************************************************************************************
.
WE draw for another PANERA Card tomorrow. Entries have been good this week, but since it is a random draw, why not get your entry in and see if you get lucky. A recent chat with Panera managing partner Archie Karel revealed that PANERA is about to invade the Highlands with a new location. WE approve and wait patiently for the day that they expand to friendly Fern Creek or Jeffersontown.

Cards fall at Syracuse 53-45

THURSDAY at C.C.

-Poor shooting, lack of rebounding sink Cards at Carrier Dome.

-From the locker room.

-Breakdown of the game and numbers.

-Golf finishes 13th in Palos Verdes

-Women's swimming leading in BIG EAST Championships after Day 1.

.
The Lady Cards overcame a seven point deficit late in the second half to tie the contest 45-45 at the 3:25 media timeout in the second half...but Syracuse free throw shooting was clutch down the final stretch for the Orange. Tia Gibbs had 16 for the Cards in the losing effort.
Shelby Harper, pictured here, gave the Cards some good minutes off the bench for the second game in a row,
.
Louisville gained the early lead against Syracuse and led 9-7 after a Monique Reid jumper with 11;54 to go in the first half. The Orange then ran off a 12-0 run the next six minutes to go up 19-9 before Becky Burke hit a shot inside to stop the bleeding with 5:53 left. Five different Syracuse players scored in the run and Louisville could not score against the aggressive Syracuse 2-3 zone.

The Cards would rally, though, over the final 3:17 of the half...erasing a 23-11 Orange lead to make it 23-19 at halftime...getting two 3 -pointers from Tia Gibbs in a 8-0 run to cut the margin to four at the break.

Louisville went 8-33 in the first half for an embarrassing 22.4% and 3-15 from 3-point range. Shoni Schimmel was 1-12 from the field and 1-8 from beyond the arc. Gibbs led the Cards with eight after twenty minutes.

The Cards fell behind 28-21 early in the second half before going on a 10-5 run that cut it to 33-31 Syracuse with 13:02 to go. Asia Taylor had six of the Cards points in the rally. A few minutes later a Burke 3 made it 35-34. Louisville stayed within one until a 6-0 'Cuse run made it 43-36 after a Morrow three. Once again, though...the Cards responded...a 7-0 run keyed by two Gibbs baskets tied the game with 5:08 on the clock and a Burke jumper in the lane made it 45-45 right before the media timeout and 3:25 left.

The Cards failed to score after that...Syracuse getting six of their final eight points from the line as Louisville fouled trying to regain ball possession.

Louisville (16-10) ended 16-58 from the field (27.8%). What is amazing about this is that Schimmel went 1-17, Reid 3-12 and Burke 3-10. Syracuse out-rebounded Louisville 51-33 and Erica Morrow led them with 17 points.
.

*************************************************************************************

WALZ on the loss...
.
"It's effort. We gave up 19 offensive boards to West Virginia also. Unfortunately, that's my fault. I've got to try to get our mentality changed...but, we won. We beat West Virginia. So the players are like...'What's the big deal? It doesn't matter, Coach...it's all right.' I told them that Syracuse had not beat a team if a team holds them to under 14 offensive rebounds. Under 14. So, I told them that under 14 rebounds and you're going to win this game. There's no pride. No pride. It's a tie score and we get beat on a free throw line box out. Then, we're going to make up an excuse that my line partner didn't pinch. You've got to have some toughness...it's just unfortunately an embarrassing effort for us when it mattered. Four minutes left in the game and you've got to come up with some plays. We don't come up with them."
.
On 4 of 29 shooting by Reid and Schimmel:
.
"I talked to Shoni at halftime. In the first half she's 1-12 and she took that one shot, a fade away on the baseline that was not a good shot. The rest of the shots she took were within the offense, ball got reversed, she had her feet set...you know, it's a difficult place to come in here and shoot sometimes. We tried to get in here and get as much shooting as we could...with all the distance there is behind the baskets and you're shooting in the dome. In the second half, I didn't think she took bad shots either....I don't worry about those shots...it's the hook shots we're trying to shoot in the paint. We've been telling them for two weeks..don't shoot that. It's a bad shot and it doesn't go in...but we're not willing to learn from it. They keep doing it and then they look over like what's wrong with that shot. It's frustrating."
.
On Tia Gibbs spark at the end of the first half:
.
"We came out of the media timeout...with 3:17 left and I told them that we just need to make a little run and we're going to be OK....and I told them...if you'll do what I ask you to do, we'll win this game. One of the things I asked them to do in the locker room is rebound. We had held them to seven offensive rebounds in the first half. Give up twelve in the second that leads to 21 second chance points. It's impossible to win a basketball game if you're not dedicated and physical enough to box out. Unfortunately, we're not right now. But...Tia drills two 3's and those were clutch shots. I was proud of her for that."
.
On Gibbs leaving late in the game...limping:
.
"She justed twisted her ankle. She's fine. We'll get back home, get treatment in the morning before class for her, get to class and get back and practice because we've got to go on the road to South Florida next. "
***********************************************************************************
Louisville had their worst shooting night of the season with the 27.6% effort. You can't win games with 5-26 3-point efforts or 16-58 from the field. Was it a case of intimidation from the aggressive 2-3 Syracuse zone...or poor shooting sightlines present in the cavernous Carrier Dome? We like the fact that the cards did go 8-10 from the foul line...but Syracuse cashed in on their much more plentiful attempts at the line (14-24) late. No bias here...the Cards had to foul late to retain possession...and Kayla Alexander did Louisville a favor by missing five straight late in the game.
.
The Louisville starters combined for 36 of the Cards anemic 45 points...Gibbs with 16, Reid 7, Taylor 6, Hines 4 and Schimmel 3. Burke came off the bench for 7 and Vails produced 2 in 14 minutes. Harper, Tay and Slaughter all played but failed to score. The four Louisville freshmen that played were good for only five points last night.
.
We hate the stat that Reid, Schimmel and Burke were a combined 7 for 39 for the game...but Louisville was still in this thing with 3:17 to go. They simply disappeared on offense at the end and Syracuse hit their free throws. Louisville had Hines foul out, Taylor gathered four and Schimmel and Gibbs ended with three each.
.
Louisville got pounded on the boards...51-33. Hines had seven for Louisville and Reid 6. Walz mentioned it in the post game and Liz Sherwood, who filled in for Paul Sanderford on the broadcast last night, kept saying throughout the game that Louisville was not blocking out. It's a basic feature of the game that players are taught ion the grade school level. Keep the opponent away from the basket. Unlike Walz, we think Louisville has the talent and strength to accomplish it...it's a matter of desire and going back to the fundamentals...then following through when the lights come on and the crowd files in.
.
1343 announced in the Dome last night for the game...a little higher than we expected. The radio feed was next to the Louisville bench and you could hear Walz most of the game shouting out instructions and talking to the referees. Anyone who questions Walz ability as a coach needs to reconsider. No one works harder than him on the sidelines...calling out plays, situations, sets and mixing in personal comments to the players...all while carrying on a sometimes comical and slightly "R" rated dialogue with the officials. Quentin Hillsman, head Syracuse coach, was rather tame in comparison to some of the antics he's pulled in the past in this series. One bull rush to mid-court to contest a call...but no fainting, fighting or fall-de-rah. Maybe "Q" has mellowed...
.
Liz Sherwood does a passable job as color commentator...still needs to get rid of the "yeah's" and "you knows" that plague our society in public speaking...but for a graduate assistant...we give her a passing grade. She understands the game, knows what Louisville is trying to do out there, is able to explain what goes right and wrong and why and offers solutions and observations. We'll see who is next to Kelch on the broadcast in Tampa. Early money is going on Paul Sanderford...
.

The UofL womens' golf team ended their final round in the Northrop Grumann Challenge with a 313...good enough to land them in 12th. place for the three day event. Sara-Maude Juneau fired a closing day round of 71 and finished with a 222 total...placing her 11th overall. Anna-Karin Ljungstrom carded a 78 yesterday...230 total and a 34th place finish. Laura Anderson's 77 totaled her out at 243 and 57th. overall. Maria Castellanos toured the final round with a 87 and her 249 total was good for 65th. Candice Wiley took 71st. with a third day score of 90 and total of 262. Tara Lyons had a 86 and finished 65th and 249, competing as an individual.
.
The Cards head to Weston, FL. beginning Feb.27th. to compete in the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge next.

.
A great start in the BIG EAST Championships for the Louisville womens' swimming team in Ralph Wright Natatorium last night. Louisville is in first place with 145 points...leading Notre Dame by by 13. The Cards won both the 800-free relay and 200 medley relays. In the 800, Lindsay LaPorte(pictured right), Breann McDowell, Esther Povaszay and Sarah Andrews turned in a time of 7:11.10 to down West Virginia, who finished at 7:11.32.
.
The 200 saw Kristina Brandenburg, Therese Bergstrom, Raine Thompson and Aileen Cole touched the wall first at 1:38.97. Notre Dame finished second..
.
"Setting the school record in the 200 medley was really nice for this team but we have to remember that this is a seven session meet. Our women need to keep thier heads on straight and take this one swim at a time." commented head swimming coach Arthur Albiero. "From this point on, nothing is going to hinge on anything we did tonight. It will hinge on how we approach each and every swim from here on out."
.
A full day of events starts this morning at 10 a.m. Thinking of popping in for a view? Better have a ticket, today is sold out. The finals are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Softball falls to Texas 6-2

CARDINAL COUPLE: FRIDAY EDITION

-Cards lose to Texas in Austin.
.
-BIG EAST Swimming and Diving.
.
-Track and Field this weekend.
.
-WHO WANTS PANERA?
.
The University of Louisville women's softball team dropped their opening game in the Texas Invitational Thursday night to #15 Texas 6-2. Freshman catcher Maggie Ruckenbrod (pictured here) had a two run homer for the Cards only scoring.

"We faced a great team tonight," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Texas has a powerful offense and an All-American pitcher, it was a tough opener. We made some great defensive plays but we needed to swing the bat better. Needed our pitching to be a little more aggressive.
The teams started off 0-0 after two innings before the Longhorns went to work. Back to back home runs in the bottom of the third off of starting pitcher Tori Collins gave Texas the early lead. They increased the margin in the bottom of the fifth when Chelsea Leonard was tapped for a line skimming double to left field, a single, a wild pitch and another single. After five, Louisville trailed 4-0.

The Cards hit the board in the top of the sixth when Katie Keller reached base on a single and Ruckenbrod smashed a deep shot over the left center fence for a four bagger. Jordan Trimble and Alicja Wolny drew back to back walks to put the go ahead run at the plate with two outs but Texas pitching ace Blair Luna fanned Colby Wherry for her 12th. strike out to end the threat.

Texas added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Texas drew a walk, got two singles and a wild pitch made it 5-2. A bases loaded walk scored another run but freshman Carlisa Connell got the third out.

The Cards had four hits in the game...Keller, Kuckenbrod, Trimble and Wherry with one each. Louisville used three pitchers...Tori Collins starting and going 2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Chelsea Leonard followed...tossing 3.1 innings and giving up four runs on six hits. Caralisa Connell got the final two outs in the sixth.

Louisville went with an opening day starting lineup (in batting order) of:

Kristin Austin-right field
Katie Keller-second base
Maggie Ruckenbrod-catcher
Chelsea Bemis-third base
Jordan Trimble-center field
Alicja Wolny-first base
Taner Fowler-designated hitter
Colby Wherry-shortstop
Jennifer Esteban-left field
.
Louisville plays again today against Northern Illinois at 5 p.m.

The BIG EAST holds the swimming and diving championships beginning today in the Ralph Wright Natatorium on campus. Diving starts the activities off and will take place thru Sunday. Tickets remain for the diving events. The swimming events start Wednesday and no tickets remain. Selling out a swimming meet...another example of Cardinal fervor for Cardinal teams.
.
Paul ran into a couple of the University of Cincinnati divers yesterday and had a nice chat with them. Lindsay Bakan (Miamisburg, OH) and Maggie Edwards (Florence, KY/Notre Dame Academy) are seniors and have participated in meets several times at the "Ralph". Both agree that Louisville has the best facilities for swimming and diving in the BIG EAST. Both participated in the dual meet against Louisville on Jan. 15th. in the Ralph Wright Natatorium...Bakan finishing third in both the 1 meter and 3 meter events. Bakan also mentioned that she has never
won a diving match in Louisville and would love to get her first win ihere in the BIG EAST Tournament.
.
Louisville is the prohibitive favorite in the swimming part of the championship. The Cards have the fastest times this season in 14 of the 21 events that will be contested. Cincinnati's Brittany Ten Eyck has the highest score in both the 1 and 3 meter diving events.
.
*************************************************************************************
