Thursday Coupnal Cardpile -- Jeff looks ahead

THURSDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

( After spending the last several days tracking down errant Shoni threes, wide-right net shots by Nikki Boltja and practice balls hit by UofL women's golf team members, staff columnist Jeff McAdams has parked the jeep, taken off the hard-hat and yellow vest and returned to the CARDINAL COUPLE Corporate Headquarters deep below the Parrish House to compose the Thursday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE. Losing a bet to Sandy on how many free-throws Bill The Goat could consecutively hit...Billy drilled 14 straight...Jeff has taken over the role of laundry attendant and catches us up on the Cardinal women's sports schedule and recruiting news. He's also training the staff chimps on proper procedures to follow in the event of a zombie Apocalypse...but all they want to do is run with their hands over their heads and scream. Now on the tee...the southpaw from the scenic Highlands...Jeff McAdams.)

I'm Looking at You, Weekend

As is frequently the case, not a lot going on mid-week, but there are some other news items to pick up on from over the course of the week that haven't gotten mentioned.

First, though, a little bit of a look ahead to this weekend's activities.

Softball in Florida

After last weekend in Las Vegas and starting off with a 4-1 record, UofL Softball heads to sunny Florida this weekend.  They're really suffering for their sport, you know.  In all seriousness, I can only imagine the toll the travel schedule of an NCAA sport would take on a person over the course of a season or four.

In Jacksonville, the Louisville squad has an early start with a 9:30am first pitch on Friday versus Stony Brook, followed by a noonish...listed at 11:45am, but after the first game of events like this, scheduling always seems to be approximate...start with Bethune Cookman.

Saturday is apparently UofL vs Ohio State day as Softball starts the second day of the Jacksonville Tournament with OSU at 11:45 or so.  OSU will make another appearance here in a few paragraphs, so hang onto the thought of beating the Buckeyes for a minute.  The evening game for our Cards is 6:30'ish with the home team Jacksonville.

No staying out late and celebrating though, as Sunday brings another early start, this one at 9am, against Stony Brook again.

Katie Keller was selected BIG EAST Player of the Week for her hot hitting streak in Vegas. Congrats to Kate 'em Up...she ate them up!

Lacrosse Here at Home

Paulie and I enjoyed watching the home opener of UofL Lacrosse beating Canisius...though we do both remain a bit mystified at some of the rules, we're learning a bit at a time.

The second game is Saturday at 2pm, again here at home with Ohio State showing up in the picture again.  With a high temperature barely above freezing forecast for Saturday, you'll want to bundle up for this one.  I've been fighting off a bit of a head cold for the past day, so I doubt I'll make it out for this one, but I will be present at other match-ups later in the season, for sure.

Do I Even Need to Mention Basketball?

1:30pm tip Sunday for the next installment of Walz Ball at the KFC Yum! Center, with DePaul coming in for the return engagement.  The Blue Demons got the W up in the windy city.  McGrath Arena only seats around 3,000...I made the road-trip up there a couple of years ago...let's show them what another 10,000 people cheering can do in a top-notch arena.

This game is the annual Pink Game honoring breast cancer survivors.  Shelby Harper always loves this one...she gets to wear even more pink than usual, and sure enough, she's on the season tickets for this one...wearing pink, of course.

More Commitments

After last week's singing...I mean signing...day, we only had one confirmed commitment to talk about.  We've got a few more that have been announced since then.

Field Hockey

Hailey got game....oh, yeah!
Justine Sowry is taking the slow and steady approach to announcing her commitments, this week announcing the signing of a local, Hailey Netherton, from Assumption High School here in Louisville.

Assumption is, of course, quite well known for Volleyball prowess...you knew I had to get a Volleyball mention in here somewhere...but they also have a stand-out Field Hockey team.  This year's team picked up the runner-up spot in state this year, and Hailey got the team MVP award.  She also has two years worth of All-State selections, as well as a couple of placements on Kentucky Select first teams the past couple of years, and a second team nod the year before.

Basketball

Sydney Brackemyer gave a verbal commitment to Louisville earlier in the week, as most of you reading this probably know. She and her mom will be in attendance at the Sunday game against DePaul. They plan on attending South East Christian for services before the contest and are looking forward to the visit. Sydney is ahead of schedule on her knee rehab and excited about several things...more strength and conditioning, getting her driver's license, getting her (teeth) braces off and cheering on UofL Sunday. If you see her and her mom at the game, give them a big CARDINAL COUPLE howdy!

Soccer

Karen Ferguson-Dayes isn't teasing us.  She announced her full recruiting class of six players this week.

Taylor Smith should provide lots
of...hey, wait a second...that's
Taylor Swift. Timmy! To Sonja's
office immediately. Darn chimps.
One local, Taylor Smith out of Christian Academy and the Javanon club.  Out of Aurora, IL, basically Chicago area, is Rachele Armand.  Paige Brown hails from Jackson, MO down around where the Mississippi and Ohio rivers join up.  Caroline Kimble comes to us from Ashton, MD, which about splits the difference between Baltimore and Washington D.C.  Christy Monroy is from what is basically a suburb of NYC in Scotch Plains, NJ.  Lastly, welcome Kari Weinland out of New Albany...no, not that New Albany, this one is in Ohio...a suburb of Columbus.

Welcome, to the newest Cardinals.  You all are gonna love it here !

Outstanding work today by Jeff. As mentioned earlier in here, the Sunday game is the wear your pink for Breast Cancer Survivors. The Cards are facing a dangerous DePaul team that recently defeated Rutgers without star Anna Martin. Whether Martin's knee will allow her to go against UofL or not...we're not sure yet. One thing we're very sure of, though...is that the team needs you to show up in big-time numbers for this one on Sunday. Jeff Walz would like to see the top deck curtains pulled back and fans in the seats in the 300 level. He has personally promised to go up there before, after and during the game to sit with each one of you, bring popcorn, Reese's Cups and a wide selection of beverages. ((OK, that last part isn't true...he's going to be busy coaching...) but please turnout in force for this one, Cardinal fans. There are only three home games left before the BIG EAST Tournament. Show up Sunday! Maybe we can talk Candyce Bingham into bringing the beverages, candy and popcorn up to the 300 level seats...

Recruiting in 2014

WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

(Recruting is always a question we get here at Cardinal Couple concerning the Louisville WBB future and staff columnist Jenny O'Bryan takes a look at a few that have been mentioned in connection with the Lady Cards.)

With the recent post game comments by Coach Walz about heading out on the recruiting trail, questions abound as to who is on the Cardinal radar in the class of 2014.

Below is a list of 2014’s whose names have been mentioned in connection with Louisville basketball.   The extent to which they are involved is not clear with all of them.  Regardless, these are a few names to pay attention to.  As always, more names could surface before the class inks.

RACHEL BELL
Rachel Bell- is a guard from Cumberland Furnace, TN.   Fullcourt.com staff writer Bob Corwin describes her as an “above average athlete, can be a crowd pleaser with her creative shot making off spin moves.”    Last August, at Nike Nationals, she garnered the attention of staff writers at the now defunct Hoopgurlz, you can find that here:

She was recently on hand at the KFC YUM! Center watching the win over St. John’s.

Sydney Brackmyre
Sydney Brackemyre- is a forward out of  Harveysburg, OH.  She has been mentioned here at Cardinal Couple several times already.  Her final three are Louisville, Dayton and Michigan.   She has been on campus multiple times and has been present for several games this season.  Sydney is rehabbing from surgery from an ACL tear this past fall, so is missing the majority of her junior year.  In the event you missed it last time we posted it, here is a great read on Brackemyre:

Ayanna Edwards
Ayanna Edwards- is a post player out of Sacramento, CA.  Edwards is a big, powerful body that really clogs up the paint.  She was at Coach Walz’s elite camp this past summer.

Erica Moore- is a forward out of Fishers, IN.  She, too, was on hand for Coach Walz’s elite camp this past summer.  She was one of my favorite players to watch that day, and was playing hard alongside Rebecca Greenwell and Mercedes Russell.   She caught the attention of Hoopgurlz evaluators last summer:
Erica Moore

Jasmine Lumpkin- is a wing from Bolingbrook, IL.  She, too, has been at several games this season.  Check out this nice, recent read on Lumpkin:

Jasmine Lumpkin
Victoria Vivians-is a wing out of Forest, MS.  Check out these two write-ups on this “dynamic, explosive player”.

Victoria Vivians

( Of course, there are always a few girls that sometimes don't surface as potential Cardinal under further down the road. Paul recently did a piece for Donny Yaste's site: Kentucky High School Hoops about a pair of juniors that are rocking Cincinnati...twins Kelsey and Chelsea Mitchell.

Monday Cardinal Couple -- Cards face Tennessee State

MONDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

- Louisville in final pre-conference game New Year's Eve.

- Brackemyre injures knee.

Jeff Walz's Louisville Cardinal basketball team engages Tennessee State Monday night at 6 p.m. in their final tuneup before BIG EAST conference play begin. The foe is 4-7 on the season, with wins over Cumberland, Samford, Idaho and Lipscomb and losses to South Alabama, Kansas State, UAB, Montana, Montana State, Cleveland State and E. Illinois.

For Louisville, the challenge is to resume the intensity that they showed against Washington State and Wagner. Ten days off for a team is never really something that a coach desires...but through individual workouts and a few team practices...the Cards should be ready to go against a team which has lost four out of their last five.

It's a chance to improve the Cardinal record to 12-2 before heading to Chicago to face dangerous DePaul, always tough Rutgers in the KFC YUM! and pesky Providence on the road all in one week's span, starting January 5th.

The overall series against the Lady Tigers is 2-2, with Louisville losing to the Nashville school last time out on
Feb. 14th, 1987...78-65. TSU is the fourth Ohio Valley Conference school Louisville has played this season...the Cards winning against Eastern Kentucky, UT-Martin and Austin Peay earlier this season.

The nation's "fiscal cliff" aside, the Cardinals face a cliff of thier own, beginning in early January. Hopefully, they'll have their ropes in place and climbing gear in order to navigate the climb back into the nation's top 10.

We'll have the recap in the Tuesday edition of CARDINAL COUPLE.

*************************************************************************

Future Cardinal target Sydney Brackemyre suffered a knee injury Saturday night and will undergo an MRI Monday to determine the extent of the damage. Our thoughts and hopes for a good diagnosis and speedy recovery go out to the top-rated 2014 prospect.

The Clinton-Massie junior has impressed college coaches greatly over the last year and Louisville, Dayton and Michigan are the final three schools in the hunt for her services, according to most reports. Clinton-Massie was playing Wilmington when the injury occured and ended up losing 46-35.

She had 32 points on 11-22 shooting and 13 boards in the semifinals of the Clinton County tournament Thursday night against East Clinton.

BASKETBALL RECRUITS

I am sure that I am missing others but word is that 2014 recruit Sydney Brackemyre @syd_the_kyd31 and 2015 recruit Maci Morris @Maci15Mo were at the game last Saturday.  Hopefully they could see themselves out there on the floor as the focus of 15000+ cheering fans.

The breath-taking panorama of the KFC YUM! Center on game day for the Louisville Women's basketball is something that never ceases to amaze us here at Cardinal Couple. 10,000-15,000 fans, the stirring intro for the Cardinal team, the LadyBirds and roar of the Cardinal fans has got to be VERY impressive to high school juniors and seniors. Heck, it's got to be impressive to anyone!

************************************************************************************

LOUISVILLE SOFTBALL

There is just a little over 2 months before the softball team opens their new season in Las Vegas against UCF on February 8.  They will participate in the Sportco Kick-Off Classic with UCF, UNLV, Minnesota, Texas Tech and DePaul.

Coach Sandy Pearsall’s 2013 team includes 8 new players.    Bios can be found by going to the Louisville Official softball website news page for November 15 at http://www.gocards.com/sports/w-softbl/spec-rel/111512aab.html .  They are Maryssa Becker, Kristina Dillard, Rachel Houck, Autumn McDuffie, Jordan McNary, Morgan Meyer, Nicole Pufahl and Tiarra Sanabria.  3 recruits are KY residents with Autumn and Morgan coming from Louisville and Jordan is from Madison, KY.

***********************************************************************************************************

ACC SOFTBALL

Plans are for various contributors to the Cardinal Couple site to provide brief overviews of various ACC sports where women’s teams are expected to be in competition with U of L.  Since Louisville will soon be joining the Atlantic Coast Conference and as a new member will be participating in their softball conference.

This past year found Georgia Tech (The Yellow Jackets, who won their third regular season ACC title in the last four years) and Virginia Tech in the ACC finals with North Carolina, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Florida state, NC State, Boston College, Virginia and Virginia Tech all fielding teams.   Five teams (Georgia Tech, Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech) advanced to the NCAA Championship while Virginia Tech went on to within just one win of advancing to the Super Regional.  Obviously the conference members have and are changing but we look forward to the competition and introduction of conference teams to our facilities and team.

Most recently the ACC softball championship tournament was played at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C. but the 2013 Conference Championship will be held May 9-11 in Tallahassee, Fla., at Dr. JoAnne Graf Field on the campus of Florida State University.

Comprehensive current and historical softball information regarding ACC teams can be found at http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/acc/sports/w-softbl/auto_pdf/2011-12/release/release.pdf

COACH WALZ on WHAS.com – 11 INTERVIEW

In case you missed it, the November 30 WHAS-11 Great Day Live Featured Video with  Rachel Platt and Terry Meiners interview of Coach Walz can be seen at http://www.whas11.com/video/featured-videos/UofL-womens-basketball-coach-Jeff-Walz-181538421.html where he not only discussed the team but also the effect our move to the ACC may bring.

***********************************************************************************************************

MILESTONES IN BASKETBALL

Shoni Schimmel surpasses 1000 points during Thursday’s win over Austin Peay.  She is the 6th player to reach this mark as a junior and the 23rd player overall to do so. "Shake 'Em" is on path to be the second leading scorer in UofL women's basketball history at this pace. Monique Reid is already the 7th leading scorer all-time at UofL and with a 300-point season, she could pass Kristin Mattox...who is 5th on the list with 1737 points.

The top three are Angel (2779 pts.) Nell Knox (1899) and Jazz Covington (1805).

(Thank you, Sandy for another comprehensive and detailed report on Cardinal Women's Athletics. We were unaware that Clemson did not field an ACC softball team, just a 'club' version. We will be bringing you more synopsis of other ACC women's athletics this week and leading up to the Cards inclusion in the conference. Scheduled down the road is Jenny and ACC women's hoops, Jeff and ACC Volleyball and Paul will preview ACC Field Hockey and Soccer. I suppose they'll dump the rest of the sports on me. Have a great day, everybody!   -- Sonja)

Friday Cardinal Couple -- Volleyball and Basketball today

.
FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Volleyball set for rematch with Marquette in Cardinal Arena

-Women's basketball opens regular season vs. Texas A&M

Exciting Friday for University of Louisville women's sports enthusiasts...with volleyball against league leading Marquette and women's basketball taking on the Texas A&M Aggies. Here's the breakdown:

First Place On The Line in Friday Afternoon game against the Golden Eagles

Louisville, Marquette and Notre Dame are tied at the top of the conference standings with 12-1 records. The Cards dealt Marquette their only conference loss back on Oct. 21st. in Milwaukee...winning 3-1.

Lola Arslanbekova had 24 kills and Emily Juhl contributed 13 in the 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19 four-game win over the Golden Eagles. Louisville will need to be wary of Lindsay Gosh and Holly Mertens this afternoon in Cardinal Arena...the two combined for 29 kills against the Cards in the previous matchup.

Game time is 4:30 p.m. Let's hope the VolleyCards can eliminate Marquette in three games...to give fans plenty of time to make the drive from campus to downtown for the basketball game!

#12 Aggies to Test Cards in Friday Night Showdown

In the season opener for both squads, it'll be the third time in history the two storied programs. Texas A&M defeated the Cards last season at College Station an Louisville won in the Illini Classic back in 1992.

A&M bowed out of the NCAA Tournament last year in the Sweet Sixteen...losing to the same Maryland team that sent UofL to the sidelines...81-74.

Probable starters for Gary Blair's squad:

#23 Adrienne Pratcher ( Senior 5'7" G Memphis, TN) She distributed 102 assists for the Aggies last season and averaged 4.5 points and 19 minutes per game.

#33 Courtney Walker ( Freshman 5'8" G Edmond, OK) 2012 McDonald's All-American will test the Cards back court with her excellent shooting and playmaking skills.

#15 Tori Scott ( Sophomore 5'10" G Marrero, LA)
Played in 23 games last year with 0.7 pts. and 4.9 minutes per game. 2011 McDonald's All-American nominee.

#5 Kristi Bellock ( Senior 6'1" F St. Rose, LA)
Started last year against Cards. Played in 28 games with 0.9 points and 6.1 minutes per contest.

#3 Kelsey Bone ( Junior 6'4" C Houston, TX)
Named 2012 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Started career at South Carolina where she was 2009 SEC leading rebounder and 2010 Second Team SEC. 11.9 points and 6.9 rebounds last year for A&M.

Head coach Gary Blair begins his 28th. season as a head coach, 11 of them at Texas A&M. Like Louisville, the Aggies will be tested early in the non-conference schedule...with games against Penn State, UConn and Marquette in November and TCU, USC and Kansas State in December.

Sydney Brackemyer
Now a member of the SEC, Texas A&M also plays Kentucky twice this year. The Aggies can "go big" if needed...with 6'7" Rachel Mitchell and 6'5" Karla Gilbert on the roster. A&M is 8-3 all-time in openers on the road.

Kelsey Mitchell
CARDINAL COUPLE recruiting expert Jenny O'Bryan tells me that 2014 prospects Sydney Brackemyer and Kelsey Mitchell will be attending tonight's game as well...so say "Hi!" to them if you see them and welcome them to the 'Ville!

Should be an action-packed affair in the KFC YUM! Center tonight. Tickets still available for the game and showing a Kroger Plus card will get you in for $2.

Let's pack the YUM! tonight for this tough contest and give the Cards a full house for their opener. Tip-off is 7 p.m. and it'll be broadcast on 790 WKRD AM radio in Louisville and WHAS TV 11-2 Digital...as well as on Insight-432, Comcast-207 and CARDS TV. For $2 bucks, though...we suggest you see this one live and in person. Gonna be a good one. UofL has designated tonight's game as a "red out"...so put the leisure suit and polyester dress shirt back in the closet (unless they're red...and I want a picture for the site if they are...)

We'll be back later tonight with a recap of both volleyball and basketball...

GO CARDS!

Basketball season is here!

.

WEDNESDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

( Staff columnist Jenny O'Bryan drains one from long range today in her article on Cardinal WBB. Like all of us at CARDINAL COUPLE, her excitement, anticipation and enthusiasm for the 2012-13 Lady Cards season can't be contained by the press, referees or turnovers. She shoots, she scores with the Wednesday edition of "Da Couple"! )

- Hoops is almost here...are u ready?

- Central Cardinal Couple Holiday boutique a blast!

Basketball Fans!

We are less than a week away from the Women’s Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon.  Limited tickets are available for the event.   If you are a procrastinator, pick up your phone and call the ticketing office now @ 502-852-5151 before time runs out.

In an email from the Louisville Athletic Ticketing Office I learned that season tickets are going in the mail this week!  Look for your tickets to be showing up in your mailbox shortly.  Parking passes, for those who have purchased them, will be arriving separately.

A few words from the ticket office:
The exhibition game being held on Wednesday, October 31 @ 7:00 p.m. is FREE!   There will not be a ticket in your season package, it is free and a ticket is not needed to attend.  For all the families out there, take your kiddo out trick or treating early, then head down to the YUM! Center for another treat, the start of Louisville Women’s Basketball!!

The last announcement from the ticketing office is that there is a time change for the EKU game at YUM! on November 28th.   The actual time of the game is 7:30 p.m.  Your season tickets are going to say a different time on them.  7:30 p.m. is the changed, correct time of the game.

It was reported here in August that 2014 wing/forward Sydney Brackemyre was on an unofficial visit to the Louisville campus August 26.  It was brought to my attention that she was back on campus (presumably for another unofficial visit) this past weekend.  (Official visits can only happen during one's senior year, are paid for by the college being visited and a prospective student athlete (psa) can only take 5 official visits.  Unofficial visits are on the student/families dime and can be made at any time, and as often as wanted).

This makes a second visit to Louisville for this rising star in the junior class, in less than two months!   We already know that Louisville is among her final 3 schools of choice (included are Dayton and Michigan) but with a second visit in less than two months WE think bodes well for our beloved Cardinals.

Perhaps Ms. Brackemyre might just be our first commitment from the class of 2014?   It is a bit premature to speculate, but from where I'm sitting, I like our chances with this young lady.  I believe I attached the following link before, but, it bears another airing to our Cardinal faithful.

We are on the cusp of the season!  Next week I will bring you a report from the Tip Off Luncheon.  The week after that I will give you my thoughts/predictions for the out of conference (OOC) slate of the schedule.
In the meantime we will keep you abreast of any recruiting news as it becomes available.

A historic weekend for women’s basketball is fast upon us as the #1 recruit in the nation, Mercedes Russell, and #40 recruit Emmonnie Henderson will be on campus for their official visit October 26-28.   The early signing period begins November 14.  Keep it here, Card fans, to learn who will be suiting up as a Cardinal next season!

Carol Kidd and Chuck Horell were in attendance
A wonderful time had by all attending the Central Cardinal Club Holiday Boutique and Style Show held yesterday at the PNC Club in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Tons of silent auction items, many booths, delicious food and a great afternoon and evening of speakers and enertainment.

Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich spoke to the dinner crowd and was excellent as always. Swimming and Diving Coach Arthur Albiero also took the stage to speak to the attendees and Mickey Clark provided the musical entertainment.

Charlie Springer and his lovely wife Barbara
The style and fashion show was great as well, with several coaches, coaches wives and the incomprable Valerie Owens Combs, displaying some great outfits to the delight of the crowd.

Mickey Clark entertained attendees!
Thanks to all who stopped by the CARDINAL COUPLE table and purchased bracelets for the St. Martha Girls Volleyball team! We raised $110.00 for their worthy cause. Also, thanks for registering for the commemorative 1980 UofL Men's Basketball National Championship plaque and talking sports with us!
