Vails sails into the River City a winner..
(CARDINAL COUPLE continues a preseason look at the newest Lady Cards joining Jeff Walz's team. Today we introduce you to 6'4" forward Sherrone Vails from Arundel high school in Maryland.)
The first thing you notice about Sherrone Vails when you watch video of her is the length. An arm span perfectly suited for pass disruption, shot blocking and grabbing rebounds. The build to put back errant shots into the hoop. You almost wish she could have been born a year earlier...her around the rim skills would have been a distinct blessing to the short numbered Lady Cards front line last year. And, it is the inside the paint profitability that will have Vails logging major minutes for the Cards in 2010-11.
Vails led Arundel to the 4A Maryland State championship her senior year and tossed in 16 points, including nine in the final quarter to lead her team to a 13 point victory in the title match. Ranked #17 by All Star Girls Report, Vails is an intimidating force around the rim...skills the Lady Cards haven't had since Jazz Covington prowled the paint for the Red and Black.
Her game is taylor made for the full court frenzy that is Jeff Walz basketball. BIG EAST opponents will find out quickly that backing into the basket and trying to play pitch and catch off the backboard will result in the orange orb getting smacked into press row.
She joins a Louisville team that is thin in the front court. Only Asia Taylor and Keisha Hines return in this area for Louisville and Vails will bring much needed depth and an enforcer prescence to the "4 ". Sherrone will have her opportunity to spearhead the transition game Walz is so fond of because of her ability to position, secure missed shots and create the outlet pass to the guards.
She'll have assistance inside from several other of the newcomers down on campus...and we'll get to them down the road.

Angel McCoughtry's path to WNBA Player of the Year just got a bit easier with news that Candice Parker is done for the year with a shoulder injury. Our friend Sue has the details for you over at They're Playing Basketball. Sue's got to be celebrating the come from behind win last night by Kobe and the Celtics. As Randy Newman penned several years back..."I Love L.A."
Great effort by Pau Gasol, Ron Artest and the guys in the 4th quarter to take the title. And Kobe...he gets my vote for NBA MVP. Refuse to lose. Phil Jackson does it again. Sorry Celtics. A great run and if Perkins is healthy...who knows...but the trophy is sitting in the City of the Angels.
