Lady Cards romp University of British Columbia...Artemeva signs pro contract

.
FRIDAY CARDINAL COUPLE

-Cards put five in double figures in win

-Anastasia Artemeva leaves volleyball for pros

Jude Schimmel had 15 points against the Thunderbirds
Balanced scoring highlighted the 110-43 win by the University of Louisville's women's basketball Thursday night over University of British Columbia. Monique Reid led the way for the Cards with 16 points, Jude Schimmel tossed in 15 points and had 5 assists. Three Lady Cards...Asia Taylor, Sara Hammond and Bria Smith contributed 11 points each. Shoni Schimmel dished out eight assists in the lopsided UofL win.

WE'RE still working on getting more details on the exhibition scrimmage...news comes rather slow out of Vancouver, so it seems. The UBC sports website doesn't even acknowledge a game was to be played. SMH...

WE'LL update with more details if more information becomes available. Doubtful we'll get a boxscore.

Louisville returns to action Friday night against Trinity Western University and will play University of Fraser Valley on Sunday night.

Senior outside hitter Anastasia Artemeva has left the University of Louisville volleyball team and signed a pro contract to play in Russia. The 6'1" Artemeva was third on the team in 2010 in points, kills and blocks. She was expected to play an important role on the 2011 version of Anne Kordes' Lady Cards volleyball team. She came to Louisville from Ulyanowsk, Russia.

Artemeva to play in Russia
Sometimes, you have to follow the money. No details are available on the terms of her pro contract...but a source told us that "when the Russians come waving an obscene amount of money and you can help out your family..you go. The timing couldn't be worse, but things like this happen."

It's not like the outside hitter spots are completely barren with her departure....Lola Arslanbeckova and Emily Juhl return and they were the two leading scorers on last year's squad. Tanya Lukyanenko saw extended time at the outside hitter slot last season and the Cardinals also add sophomore transfer Kaitlynn James from Nebraska. James was a product of Ron Kordes' Louisville Assumption high school program and played a year for the Cornhuskers before deciding to retire from volleyball because of injuries. The time off has been beneficial for her, though and she'll suit up for the Cards in the 2011 season.

Speaking of things Kordes related, Ron Kordes (Anne's dad) is the head girls volleyball coach at Assumption High School in Louisville and they have been ranked #1 in a pre-season poll. You can expect Mercy and Sacred Heart to give them a battle.
